This book was *entirely* filler. No new character development, no new plotlines, no new twists, even scene-to-scene there was hardly any movement at all (imprisoned-imprisoned-imprisoned-imprisoned-out-imprisoned-imprisoned... etc...) AND, the way I see it, everyone was already in prison all the way up to the end of #4, so not even THAT was new or unique to book 5.

All this one did was annoy me. Brexley, sweetheart, blaming yourself for all the bad things that bad people do is the height of selfishness. How self absorbed do you have to be to make other people's tragedies all about yourself??! It's like she's trying to make herself a martyr! Who does that!

Overall, I rate this installment a BIG FAT NOPE.
Skip it entirely and you'll catch on within the first few chapters of book 6, OR, read the last few chapters of #5 and you won't have missed a thing going forwards.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when authors use "TSTL" as a plot device. It's one thing when a character is portrayed as a bit on the slow side, but when the character is supposedly of average(or more) intelligence, is a fully capable adult, etc.. and they continue to trip over their own feet (metaphorically) into one dumb, obvious situation after another?? It gets old.

"Oops, I tripped over a clue and accidentally learned who the bad guy is!!"
I find that to be extremely lazy writing. Can the author not come up with *any* realistic situations where the characters learn more and keep moving towards the conclusion?

I truly have no huge complaints about the story. I didn't love any of the characters, but I liked them well enough, and the author was great about keeping their traits consistent. (Which is actually more rare than you'd expect, in my experience)
The narration though.... it was pretty bad. The female narrator - terrible! She stumbled through the English language like it was her first time speaking. The word "feral" was mispronounced MULTIPLE(3+) times as "Pharrell" as in Pharrell Williams. Oh, and "subtlety" as bubble-tea with an 's'.
It really bothered me through the first book, but then I was able to talk my brain into believing that it was a purposeful affectation used to give the FMC more depth. Yeah, right. But it worked. If these types of things get under your skin, definitely skip this one!

If I wanted to sit around and talk about my feelings, I would find myself a real-life boyfriend or girlfriend. This is supposed to be "fantasy" romance, not a gd self-help book!
I also had some major issues with the so-called coverage of a gender-fluid character. A lot of it simply did not add up, but what really got under my skin was how the author *very clearly* related Carivel's visceral aversion to anything she deemed "feminine" to some undefined trauma meted out by her mother as a young child. Traumatized fear reactions and gender fluidity are not the same thing. Of course a person can deal with both, but the way this was written made it seem like she was hiding behind gender issues instead of facing up to her actual trauma. I think it sends some mixed messages to the target audience this book is marketed towards, and that's not cool.

The plot was interesting enough, though it did move very slowly. The characters were unique from each other enough so that it wasn't just a cookie-cutter RH, but the author did lean heavily on stereotypes and educated assumptions to make it so (vs a more in-depth character development.) Really, the only major complaint I have is about the FMC, Sage. Her mood swings were a bit much. I had to consciously disconnect from the story in order to get through it, for example: Sage insists on something outrageous, forbidden and dangerous - when that comes back to bite her companions, she decides to "help" them by taking responsibility (because it 100% was her fault), she throws herself in front of companions to take punishment, leaving them with even less options, when her "sacrifice" is accepted to save them, Sage is now FURIOUS that they didn't object, even though she left no room for that. It boggles the mind. She's a constant case of no-win situations. Girl needs a reality check!

It's decent as a waste of time. This reads like a first draft from someone's high school creative writing course. Someone talented, yes, but new and not practiced. Also, I HATED the female narrator - she spoke like she had cotton balls stuffed in the back of her mouth. This combined with the rather contrived dialogues made for a somewhat unpleasant experience.

..as in, this entire book is really just an epilogue to the *actual* story of the first five books. Which I am totally okay with, it was nice to see more of how things fell out in the post-Event world(s) and in Thalia's personal life, but don't get your hopes up. There is no new "big bad", no overarching conflict to overcome, no journeys or quests.. it's .. an EPILOGUE.

Epilogue: a continuation of a story that gives readers a peek into what the HEA looks like for the main characters, a chance to spend more time with them in their world. So be forewarned!

I generally like most of what Eva Chase comes up with, and yes, the storyline for this one was unique and interesting, but I just.. I didn't like it. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what didn't work for me. This series was like a Spanish soap opera in its 27th season vs. a new prime-time drama. It has all the right parts, but the actors are old and tired and completely out of touch with reality. You just can't relate. My opinion is to skip this series.

Seriously conflicted

This one.. I.. I kinda hated it - but, I also understood it, and *why* I hated it and ... that seemed like a natural enough reaction to the storyline, not pent up annoyances at stupid characters or whatever - a totally different kind of dislike. If that makes sense. (!) I understood where Mercy was coming from. I'm not going to judge someone's reaction to that kind of devastation. (Well, only to a point) So I commiserated with her to some extent, but I also kept (trying to) put myself in her shoes and found that I just couldn't 100% get behind her either. Grief causes irrational reactions, sure, but we are all still responsible for our actions. There is no excuse to make sweeping generalizations of a whole group of people and decide to, what? To exterminate them? Ffs, on a larger scale that is called GENOCIDE, and no, it doesn't matter whether you 'like' the group in question or not.
SO. Conflicted. I get it, it's not poor writing, I just, well, didn't *like* it. Still like the series though, but it's better without this one :)

This book is full of pain, pain and more pain. I truly did enjoy it, but the ending was kind of.. difficult. It's one thing for a heart-wrenching story to resolve in a HEA, but this one didn't end so tidily. Don't get me wrong - everything does work out in then end, but I came away from it feeling like one of the characters was still being punished in a way, and never fully received the forgiveness and love that they deserved. That just makes me sad! They story is full of terrible circumstances and impossible choices, and both characters did plenty to punish themselves, neither one deserved to be blamed for the whole mess. So, that leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I think that I wouldn't reread this one for that reason. It was absolutely worth a read, but I couldn't emotionally handle it twice, knowing that my heart would still be a little bit broken in the end.
