Historia
An activist attorney is killed in a cute little L.A. trolley called Angels Flight, far from Harry Bosch's Hollywood turf. But the case is so explosive - and the dead man's enemies inside the L.A.P.D. are so numerous - that it falls to Harry to solve it. Now the streets are superheating. Harry's year-old Vegas marriage is unraveling. And the hunt for a killer is leading Harry to another high-profile L.A. murder case, one where every cop had a motive. The question is, did any have the guts?

Historia
An almost-true story about a small town in Texas that ought to exist if it doesn’t, with characters like Sam the Lion, the delectable Jacy, and Ruth Popper, the coach’s wife. Set in a small, dusty, Texas town, The Last Picture Show introduced the characters of Jacy, Duane, and Sonny: teenagers stumbling toward adulthood, discovering the beguiling mysteries of sex and the even more baffling mysteries of love.

Still a great book
Revisado: 03-31-23
Although the setting- rural Texas in the 1950's- is distant, the stories of adolescence, and the difficulties in growing up and moving on are universal. The writing is impeccable and always interesting. Even, and maybe especially, adults have difficulties with transitions.

Historia
Every hero works to soothe the fears of the people during their period in history. Heroes are not only brave, but they’re also able to navigate the convoluted corridors of society, and to see through the respectable pretense of others to detect the evil that lies within. So, who better to take on the foggy, crime-ridden streets and strict social mores of Victorian London than the iconic literary detective Sherlock Holmes? In Sherlock Holmes: Beyond the Elementary, you’ll investigate the history behind Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s whip-smart, charismatic detective.

More than meets the eye
Revisado: 02-15-23
This course started out in a somewhat desultory and dry fashion. However, the many readings from the Sherlock Holmes stories held my interest. In addition the questions posed toward the end, and the professors answers are worth the wait. Many of the issues that Doyle considered, such as the worth of various types of work, and the relation of the sexes are quite relevant today. Highly recommend!

"I’m James Taylor and I’m a professional autobiographer", says the celebrated folk singer at the start of this tender audio memoir. Through decades of music by one of the best-selling musicians of all time, who created classics like "Fire and Rain" and "Carolina in My Mind", James Taylor has doled out his history in the poetry of his work. Taylor says his early life is, "the source of many of my songs", and Break Shot is a tour of his first 21 years in rich, new detail.

Great Brief Audiobook with Music
Revisado: 02-15-20
If you love James Taylor music, and especially if you grew up with it, you do not want to miss this book. JT talks about how his early life led to his becoming a musician, and the origin of some of his most well known songs, including "Fire and Rain" and "Sweet Baby James". Some of the music is included which is a great use of the Audible format. Wish it had been 10x as long!

Historia
Ask the great poker players how they'd play a hand and the answer is always "it depends." That answer can be infuriating. But guess what? It really does depend. The key to becoming a great poker player is in knowing what it depends on. At last there's a book that gives you that answer. Poker is a game of so many variables; table position, flop texture, the number of players in a hand, the personalities of your opponents, and so much more.

Loses its way
Revisado: 02-27-19
Annie Duke obviously is a world class poker player, and I was intrigued by her statement that she would provide general guidelines to understand how to play, rather than specific ways to play specific situations. Unfortunately she was not able to deliver on this promise. The book became a very long list of specific situations like how to play, " heads up, top pair, textured board, out of position when the player ahead of you raises". It might have been better in written format. Still, if you can get through it there is a lot of useful information.

In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls". While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying chapters in modern American history.

Excellent Primary Source
Revisado: 08-12-18
This is very good primary source account (although written and remembered decades later with the aid of other sources) of both the optimism and the ultimate loss of innocence of the 60's counter culture movement. It is written honestly, but with the perspective of someone who became born again after suffering an extremely traumatic childhood. This gives it a certain quality of a high school report on what I did during summer vacation.

Perception is the foundation of human experience, but few of us understand why we see what we do, much less how. By revealing the startling truths about the brain and its perceptions, Beau Lotto shows that the next big innovation is not a new technology: It is a new way of seeing. In his first major book, Lotto draws on over two decades of pioneering research to explain that our brain didn't evolve to see the world accurately. It can't!

A long slog
Revisado: 06-17-18
There is some useful and interesting information here, however the author strays far from his area of expertise and the overall tone is quite pedantic. In addition good editing could have decreased the overall size by 50% without affecting the quality at all. If you have enough time to get through it and if it is not expensive it may be worth a listen.

Missing important details
Revisado: 10-01-17
The story is interesting, and the author shares details of her addiction which are frightening. However the stories are never fleshed out. It is almost as though she is afraid to cover negative or personal details about others in her story. This is most apparent in the epilogue where she mentions in passing interesting things that have happened to her since being in recovery. These are the kind of stories (related in depth) that your audience is interested in! For a superior memoir of recovering from alcoholism I highly recommend Blackout by Sarah Hepola, or maybe Dry by Augusten Burroughs, or even Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe.

Historia
A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, Blackout is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure - the sober life she never wanted. For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was "the gasoline of all adventure". She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. But there was a price. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth.

Compelling account of alcoholism
Revisado: 10-01-17
There are some autobiographies which are so good that you do not want to stop listening. This is one of those. The author shares stories which made me flinch, but her honesty was necessary to understand where she was coming from. The book also touches on related issues, such as girls coming of age, alcohol as a social rite, and family responsibility. Part of the books being almost unputdownable was the sense of humor- sometimes wry, and the meaning derived from such a painful journey. Hearing this book read by the person who had these experiences makes me recommend the audible version over the written version. Her delivery could not be duplicated.

Mainly ignores the most important issues
Revisado: 08-23-17
The potential societal consequences of the wide availability of free pornography is among the least talked about changes wrought by the internet. The title of this audiobook is excellent and made me think it would address some of these, much as "One Child" addressed the unforeseen consequences of China's one child policy. Instead it is principally a yearning for the "good old days" of the "adult film" industry where the producers, stars, and others involved in producing films made a good living. It barely touched the surface (although it mentions in passing) of important issues like:
1. What leads people to participate in this industry, especially now- knowing financial rewards are limited?
2. What are the lives of people in this industry like- long term and day to day? What are the effects on their health?
3. What is the effect on children who are exposed to these films?
4. Who watches these films? What is the effect on their lives?
5. Has the presence of this industry caused any change in normal sexual development?
6. Is there any connection with mental illness, both among those in the industry and consumers
Instead of taking on these questions, Jon revels in his access to the person who consolidated most of the available porn sites. He made a fortune. There are also multiple interviews with directors and stars who talk about what a good living they used to make.
