Good to hear his side
Revisado: 04-08-25
Interesting to hear Sonny’s recount of the major events like Nike signing Jordan and the ABCD camps, etc…
Would be awesome if anyone involved in the project actually listened to the reading of the book because the mispronunciations of major basketball figures is embarrassing.

Historia
We are living in the Wild West of college sports. Name, Image and Likeness endorsements, the transfer portal, collectives, conference realignment, the powerful influence of media companies have all rendered the notion of amateur athletics a quaint relic of the past, replaced by a Brave New World where money and self-interest rule. The Price is a sweeping, in-depth, thought-provoking look at an inflection point in big-time college football.

Well-researched on a moving target
Revisado: 03-27-25
The book is an excellent look at the current state of college football. I’ve read both authors for years, and they know their stuff. Great deep dive into all that is going on off the field in college football.
Sports writers must find people who are familiar with sports to read their books. The readers voice is fine, but he is clueless about football and nobody listened to the final product before releasing it on Audible.

Really nothing to do with Ted Lasso
Revisado: 04-06-24
This has solid leadership ideas, but no real connection to Ted Lasso. The author doesn’t reference specific scenes or ideas, but just general concepts from Ted. Author was too worried about avoiding spoiler alerts, even though the show ended a while ago, and misses the mark on what could have been a fun concept.

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Lars Anderson comes a revealing portrait of the first family of American sports. What the Kennedys are to politics, the Mannings are to football. Two generations have produced three NFL superstars: Archie Manning, the Ole Miss hero-turned-New Orleans Saint; his son Peyton, widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks ever to play the game; and Peyton's younger brother, Eli, who won two Super Bowl rings of his own.

Heavy focus on Archie

I loved the book. It does have a heavy focus on Archie before getting into the kids. Great insight!

Terrific work, terrible narrator
Revisado: 03-20-22
The book is very thorough with great insight. Too much time about the relationship with Bobby Knight for my liking, but I understand why it is in there. The narrator is a joke. He couldn’t pronounce several key basketball names correctly. Does anyone even listen to it before the put it in Audible?
Loved listening to the insight into USA Basketball. Also very fair on the good and bad with Coach K. He is no saint.

Award-winning journalist Vicki Mayk raises a critical question for football players and their communities: Does loving a sport justify risking your life? This is the insightful and deeply human story of Owen Thomas - a star football player at Penn, who took his own life when he was 21, the result of the pain and anguish caused by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Revisado: 09-10-20
If you have never heard of football or CTE, this book is for you. The first half of the book spends time discussing football, football’s popularity, and CTE. The second half does a better job focusing on Owen, his story, and the tragic tale of a young player dying of CTE without a significant concussion, but due to numerous subconcussive hits.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

Revisado: 05-23-20
I love sports, but this read/listened liked an out of date textbook. It took a subject that could have been interesting and made it painful to listen to. I gave up on it about half way through. Seems like they are recycling old material with a few new additions.

Historia
In the 1930s and 1940s, there was nothing bigger in Texas high school football than the Masonic Home Mighty Mites - a group of orphans bound together by hardship and death. These youngsters, in spite of being outweighed by at least 30 pounds per man, were the toughest football team around. They began with nothing - not even a football - yet in a few years were playing for the state championship on the highest level of Texas football. This is a winning tribute to a courageous band of underdogs from a time when America desperately needed fresh hope and big dreams.

Verne doesn’t read the book
Revisado: 03-15-19
It’s a major snafu that Verne doesn’t read the book. The book itself is pretty fun. Cool tales from his days with the Cowboys, working the Olympics, the Masters, and of course the SEC!
