Couldn't get through the stereotypes
Revisado: 08-02-24
I'll admit, I am reviewing this book without finishing it. I just couldn't get past the stereotype of a doddering old man who hasn't heard of the internet. I found it insulting. I didn't care for the narrator either.

Historia
Woodrow Wilson Nickel, age 105, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. It’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to become Southern California’s first giraffes. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow.

One of the Best Books Ever!
Revisado: 08-02-24
I read this book shortly before going to Africa and have shared it with about 10 people. It is an extraordinary story based on true events that will keep you listening long after you pull your car into the driveway (if you listen, like I do, while driving). This book inspired me to visit the Giraffe Center in Kenya where I had a chance to feed giraffes. You will forever love these gentle beings.

From the best-selling author of The Things We Cannot Say, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, comes a poignant post-WWII novel that explores the expectations society places on women set within an engrossing family mystery that may unravel everything once believed to be true.

I enjoy this author and appreciate the complex characters and relationships. Be prepared that this author has a strong point of view on women’s reproductive rights.

Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears.

Remarkable, and much more than a war story
Revisado: 05-11-22
I thought "I can't listen to one more war story" but when I saw how many people had read this book and loved it, I decided to try it. This is one of the best books I have listed to. It's not just the story of a young Polish woman in occupied Poland but also the story of a family in America, and the complexities of their relationships. One child is gifted and one is on the autism spectrum. As the story unfolds we begin very gradually to see the connections. This is a book I will remember!

Historia
Isabel Delancey, a classical violinist, has always taken her comfortable life for granted. But when her husband dies suddenly, leaving her with a mountain of debt, she and her two children are forced to abandon their home and move to the Spanish House, a now-dilapidated manor Isabel inherited in the English countryside. With the house falling down around them, and the last of her savings disappearing fast, Isabel turns to her neighbors for help, not knowing that her mere presence there has stirred up long-standing obsessions.

I love JoJo Moyes but this book reminded me a bit of a bodice ripper I might have read in Junior High. Better than that but not her best.

A bit tedious and predictable
Revisado: 09-21-18
I wanted to like this novel better than I did. It is the story of two women, a grandmother who lived in India in the 1930s and her granddaughter who is a contemporary. The grandmother’s story is by far more interesting, and I appreciated learning what it was like to be a female in India during that time. I found the daughter, whose chapters were written in first person, to be whiny. The narrator didn’t help - she spoke quite slowly and it was annoying. Also the plot line was predictable. Nonetheless I finished it but found myself eager to get to the end so I could start a new book.

Fabulous book and narrator
Revisado: 05-10-18
I was captivated by “Behold the Dreamers.” It is a story about marriage and family as much as it is about immigrants in the US, and their fight to stay here. The characters are complex, not completely good or bad. The book is set in 2008 before the financial meltdown which gives the book an interesting historic perspective. The narrator was by far one of the best I have heard - adds dimension to the novel.

Historia
From neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice comes a powerful and heartbreaking exploration of regret, forgiveness, freedom, and what it means to be alive.
An accomplished concert pianist, Richard received standing ovations from audiences all over the world in awe of his rare combination of emotional resonance and flawless technique. Every finger of his hands was a finely calibrated instrument, dancing across the keys and striking each note with exacting precision. That was eight months ago.
Richard now has ALS, and his entire right arm is paralyzed. His fingers are impotent, still, devoid of possibility. The loss of his hand feels like a death, a loss of true love, a divorce—his divorce.
He knows his left arm will go next.
Three years ago, Karina removed their framed wedding picture from the living room wall and hung a mirror there instead. But she still hasn’t moved on. Karina is paralyzed by excuses and fear, stuck in an unfulfilling life as a piano teacher, afraid to pursue the path she abandoned as a young woman, blaming Richard and their failed marriage for all of it.
When Richard becomes increasingly paralyzed and is no longer able to live on his own, Karina becomes his reluctant caretaker. As Richard’s muscles, voice, and breath fade, both he and Karina try to reconcile their past before it’s too late.
Poignant and powerful, Every Note Played is a masterful exploration of redemption and what it means to find peace inside of forgiveness.

Loved this book and learned a lot
Revisado: 04-24-18
I have been a fan of Lisa Genova’s since “Still Alice” and have read all her books. With this incredibly emotional story about ALS and an estranged couple who are dealing with it, I wondered, “can the book be as good as her others.” My opinion is yes - in fact I think she is becoming more accomplished as a writer. My only critique is that the epilogue wrapped things up in a bow.

Wanted to love it more
Revisado: 02-13-18
I had expected to love this book -historic fiction, strong female protagonist, accomplished author. But I didn’t. The chapters about Anna were good, the ones about her father Eddie were compelling. But I couldn’t get interested in her gangster lover, and some scenes with him didn’t ring through. Nonetheless all three narrators were solid.
