Historia
Miss Clara Marie Stanton's family may be eccentric, but they certainly aren't insane. London, England, 1860: When Clara's ex-fiancé begins to spread rumors that her family suffers from hereditary insanity, it's all she can do to protect them from his desperate schemes, society's prejudice, and a lifetime in an asylum. Then Clara's grandfather Drosselmeyer brings on an apprentice with a mechanical leg, and all pretense of normalcy takes wing.

Unique but definitely religious
Revisado: 01-05-25
I liked the story and the characters. I loved Mrs. Stanton and her whimsy. It was a nice imaginative story that hasn’t been told.
I do agree with the others that there was a lot of forced religion. At first I thought it was super accurate to portray characters from this time with strong devotion to Christianity then it started to feel forced and pointed at the reader.
It was a good story and performance. I appreciate the book. I respect the religion of the author and am happy she was able to portray it in a book. My preference however would have been less of it or some type of sign in the summary.

Who hasn’t wondered for a split second what the world would be like if a person who is the object of your affliction ceased to exist? But then you’ve probably never heard of The McMasters Conservatory, dedicated to the consummate execution of the homicidal arts. To gain admission, a student must have an ethical reason for erasing someone who deeply deserves a fate no worse (nor better) than death. The campus of this “Poison Ivy League” college—its location unknown to even those who study there—is where you might find yourself the practice target of a classmate.

I loved this book. It was witty and original. I am in higher ed so I loved the references to that too. It was not just another crime book and I can’t wait to listen to the next one.

Not too sappy
Revisado: 01-20-23
I usually absolutely avoid books with any plots based on romantic relationships. But I appreciate that love isn’t just thrown without any difficulties or hesitations in this series. Could the plots be more complex? Probably, but it’s a nice listen and imaginative. I like these books and will likely listen again some day. Narrator gets points for not having a cringey male speaking voice.

Historia
In The Art of the English Murder, Lucy Worsley explores this phenomenon in forensic detail, revisiting notorious crimes like the Ratcliff Highway Murders, which caused a nationwide panic in the early 19th century, and the case of Frederick and Maria Manning, the suburban couple who were hanged after killing Maria's lover and burying him under their kitchen floor. Our fascination with crimes like these became a form of national entertainment, inspiring novels and plays, prose and paintings, poetry and true-crime journalism.

The biggest disappointment with this book is that Lucy isn’t the narrator. She would make this great.

Historia
Karen Abbott illuminates one of the most fascinating yet little-known aspects of the Civil War: The stories of four courageous women - a socialite, a farmgirl, an abolitionist, and a widow - who were spies. After shooting a Union soldier in her front hall with a pocket pistol, Belle Boyd became a courier and spy for the Confederate army, using her charms to seduce men on both sides. Emma Edmonds cut off her hair and assumed the identity of a man to enlist as a Union private, witnessing the bloodiest battles of the Civil War.

I didn’t have a problem with the narration as others have. I had a hard time figuring out who was who. I got the stories confused and for some time thought there were only two girls.

Historia
With his tumultuous love life, relentless pursuit of a male heir, and drastic religious transformation, England's King Henry VIII's life sounds more like reality television than history. He was a man of fascinating contradictions. What could have caused his incredible paradoxes? Could there be a simple medical explanation for the king's descent into tyranny? Where do the answers lie? Blood will tell.

Interesting? Absolutely.
Revisado: 08-27-19
This was an interesting look at the actions of King Henry VIII. There’s some clever humor and some information I learned for the first time. The entire book is based on speculation which has to be considered while listening.

Probably would have been better to read this
Revisado: 04-13-18
Would you listen to Sarum again? Why?
Possibly, just to understand the stories.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Sarum?
What one character does when he realizes he has the plague.
Any additional comments?
I tend to listen to audiobooks when I am doing other things. This book is just so hard for me to get into. I think it would have been better if I read it. It is hard for me to follow names and stories by listening to this.
