A story of life and death, love and betrayal, and maybe redemption
Revisado: 01-02-24
I was captivated by the complexity of characters and the enormity of the bronze sculpting process. And GG has the old cranky codger voice down pat. Despite the seriousness of the subject, you are left hoping they each will find their way.

Historia
The story of Texas is the story of struggle and triumph in a land of extremes. It is a story of drought and flood, invasion and war, boom and bust, and of the myriad peoples who, over centuries of conflict, gave rise to a place that has helped shape the identity of the United States and the destiny of the world.

The facts without the sugarcoating
Revisado: 12-12-23
I was interested in a version of Texas history that I didn't learn in school, and that's what I got. Well worth the listen, as only George Guidall can tell it (except for the mispronunciation of Kleberg). Fascinating insights into people previously known only as heroes.

Historia
For a thousand years the ash fell and no flowers bloomed. For a thousand years the Skaa slaved in misery and lived in fear. For a thousand years the Lord Ruler, the "Sliver of Infinity," reigned with absolute power and ultimate terror, divinely invincible. Then, when hope was so long lost that not even its memory remained, a terribly scarred, heart-broken half-Skaa rediscovered it in the depths of the Lord Ruler's most hellish prison.

A very imaginative tale, wonderfully told
Revisado: 11-26-20
I couldn't put it down. The narrator's voice took a little getting used to at first, but I was soon immersed in the story. The characters had depth, the protagonist made you want to hope, the protege took that hope to heart. A few surprising twists kept me on my toes. Now to book 2.

Historia
Sheriff Walt Longmire is enjoying a celebratory beer after a weapons certification at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy when a younger sheriff confronts him with a photograph of 25 armed men standing in front of a Challenger steam locomotive. It takes him back to when, fresh from the battlefields of Vietnam, then-deputy Walt accompanied his mentor Lucian to the annual Wyoming Sheriff's Association junket held on the excursion train known as the Western Star, which ran the length of Wyoming from Cheyenne to Evanston and back.

All the characters are there, including Martha. I like the reference to his time in the war, as it brought back memories of earlier books.

wonderful characters, lively story

This was my first book by Elmer Kelton, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Except for the ending, I guess. Plus, I would listen to George Guidall read the dictionary...

Still a favorite
Revisado: 06-04-18
Lisette Lecat's narration never fails to please, and the stories continue to entertain even after the 6th installment. Precious Ramotse and her companions unravel even more conundrums, but the endearing commentaries on life in general and Botswana in particular are the highlights. I missed the tiny white van's precarious adventures, and I hope they return.
