Historia
Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general—also known as her tough-as-talons mother—has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you’re smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away...because dragons don’t bond to “fragile” humans. They incinerate them.

A teen romance fantasy at the expense of a good story.
Revisado: 04-17-25
Reads like the imagination of a horny teen girl. Too much focus on "cocks" and "clits" instead of plot contradictions & story development.

Heavy on the Left agenda
Revisado: 09-28-23
Unfortunately, I had to stop listening to this book (and will be requesting my credit back). While the story is OK (though seemingly geared toward the younger 20-somethings that live at home with mom and dad), the heavy-handed left wing agenda got to be too much. The main plot line assumes that everyone believes all of the Left party lines are unquestionable facts (from climate change to the Covid vaccine being the only thing that prevented humanity from being wiped out), and anyone with views to the right of full Left are either complete nutters or are evil and in league with the story's enemy!
Just tell a story and leave the political propaganda out!

Horrible Conclusion to the Series
Revisado: 01-14-19
This "final"? book to the series was extremely disappointing. Unlike the other books, the narration was off (like the narrator forgot what voices/personalities were used in the other books), the story drug on and offered no real excitement (I kept thinking that it just HAD to get better), and the story line just petered out in pathetic depression (like the author was calling it in on this one, and needed an excuse to walk away from it).

Decent story - if a little teen angsty
Revisado: 07-02-18
Overlooking the fact that this book is probably for "tweens", the story is decent if you look past all the angst that is pervasive.
The performance by James Patrick Cronin (in the series), is probably my biggest complaint. He ends many dialogue lines (especially for the protagonist) with an octave increase as if it were a question - making the characters seem either dumb or confused. There is a big difference in a scene where a character is supposed to be coming across as a force-to-be-reckoned-with making a statement like, " I am," versus how it is (often) performed as a question, like, "I am?". Because this is an audio book it adds to the confusion when the author ends a sentence with "..he said", but it is performed as a question - leaving me wondering if the dialogue ended with a period or a question mark (and should, therefore, have been "..he asked"), or if it is the performance that got it wrong.

Just too much to overlook - had to turn it off
Revisado: 07-02-18
Even with the understanding that the audience for this is probably "tween", there are only so many times a reader/listener can realistically be expected to ignore an obvious plot hole or character personality-lapse just for the (lazy) convenience of pushing a plot beyond a natural point of termination. The whole thing started to feel so contrived. It is rare that I turn off a book (especially this far into a series).
Adding to that is the bad performance by James Patrick Cronin (in the series). He ends many dialogue lines (especially for the protagonist) with an octave increase as if it were a question - making the characters seem either dumb or confused. There is a big difference in a scene where a character is supposed to be coming across as a force-to-be-reckoned-with making a statement like, " I am," versus how it is performed like, "I am?". Yet another reluctant protagonist
Revisado: 12-19-16
Any additional comments?
I must have missed that this book is geared toward teen readers. The story had potential, but the characters were so full of the stereotypical self-doubt and pre-teen angst, that it became a burden to continue listening. I listened through to the end to give it a chance, but waiting that long for even a hint of something more than ordinary was definitely NOT worth it.

Finally, it's over!
Revisado: 12-19-16
Any additional comments?
The first book of this series was exceptional. The second book of the series was a decent listen. But by the end of this final book of the series, the author had obviously run out of ideas and seemed to either have forgotten about the motivations that drove the characters in the first two books, or just stopped caring. It felt like the author was paid in advance for a number of words, and that that goal had to be met - even if the story ended 300 pages ago.
The second half of this book was a train wreck that I just kept hoping would get better (after devoting so much time to the series). I had to stop listening several times because of the frustrating plot holes and erratic character behavior. It was a mercy when it ended.

"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

Good listen (to half of the stories, anyway)
Revisado: 12-19-16
How could the performance have been better?
Craig Wasson's narration is fine - even enjoyable, but Jessica Hecht's performance is distracting; her tone and cadence may, possibly, be good in a self-help book, but not in something as deep as the stories here. Unfortunately, I could not listen to more than five minutes of the stories she narrated.

Heros have unrealistic lack of confidence
Revisado: 02-08-16
Needlessly wordy at times. Irritating how all protagonists constantly second guess themselves in whiney internal dialogue.
Those two issues detract from what is otherwise a decent story.

It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.
