Historia
The Second World Wars examines how combat unfolded in the air, at sea, and on land to show how distinct conflicts among disparate combatants coalesced into one interconnected global war. Drawing on 3,000 years of military history, Victor Davis Hanson argues that despite its novel industrial barbarity, neither the war's origins nor its geography were unusual. Nor was its ultimate outcome surprising. The Axis powers were well prepared to win limited border conflicts, but once they blundered into global war, they had no hope of victory.

Ww2 is so big. So many people, stories, factors, history. It’s overwhelming but this book really helps to breakdown what ww2 was about. Does not cover specific experience and stories compared to memoirs but it is really knowledgeable and covers facts to hone down on a war that epic in scale. His explanations of people, leadership, weapons, technology, strategy, culture is really full and covers all grounds as best as can be. Read it. You will have a great overall, general yet detailed understanding of what this large war was about.

Historia
The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

Very good even after many years.

Can’t believe marines went through such crazy experiences. I don’t why I am so obsessed with the pacific war. I think it’s because I cannot imagine at all how possibly such an experience can be like. But Sledge really helps visualize what an infantry mans life is like in combat. He really fills in a lot of details.
Also recommend China marine. Excellent read and knowledge on what happened right after the end of the war for the marines. Probably the best combat memoir out there.

Historia
Growing up on a farm in Ohio, George always preferred being outdoors and exploring. This made school a challenge, but his hunting, fishing, and trapping skills helped put food on his family's table. As a poor teenager living in a rough area, he got into regular brawls, and he found holding down a job hard because of his wanderlust. After working out West with the CCC, he decided that joining the Marines offered him the opportunity for adventure plus three square meals a day; so he and his brother joined the Corps in 1941.

Read a lot of marine memoirs but this one stands out.

So far with the old breed and 22 on Peleliu are my favorite. Very rich in memories. George really went through a lot and has some crazy stories. It helped me visualize the life, horror and hardships in combat. Very good listen. It is epic to hear all that he has been through from his enlistment till his passing. What a full life.
