Historia
The racialized and exoticized cult of Voodoo occupies a central place in the popular image of the Crescent City. But as Kodi A. Roberts argues in Voodoo and Power, the religion was not a monolithic tradition handed down from African ancestors to their American-born descendants. Instead, a much more complicated patchwork of influences created New Orleans Voodoo, allowing it to move across boundaries of race, class, and gender.

Didn't match up to my expectations
Revisado: 05-04-18
While the overall message of the book was quite interesting, I feel like the same point was made repeatedly throughout the book. Being a native New Orleanian myself, I am well-aware that there was an economic gain to be had by practicing Voodoo, but there is so much more that could have been addressed. I wanted more history. I wanted more articles describing eye-witness accounts. Being it is about politics as well as religion, I wanted more court cases or police reports. I also wanted a more intimate look at Marie Laveau.
Also, the narration was a disappointment. Although I can hear an authentic New Orleans dialect when he would read most passages, every time he quoted someone there would be this awkward pause in between words. He also seemed to change his dialect when quoting to perhaps "dumb it down" a bit. Although the grammar is believable when he did this, the pronunciations were very off. And the pauses eventually became like nails on a chalkboard.
Overall, although the information and story had a good foundation, I ultimately found it lacking.

Historia
In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls". While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying chapters in modern American history.

A great window into the past

Although the narration was a little slow and at times monotonous, the story made up for it. It was so interesting to have an intimate look into the culture that surrounded Dianne and how her psyche was effected by her surroundings and circumstances. I couldn't stop listening! She was such a strong person to face so much in life . Definitely worth the listen.

Not up to par with the rest of the series
Revisado: 03-01-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Narrator ruined the enjoyment quite a bit.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
This book lacked the action that we have come to expect from this series. It seemed to have too much self-assessment of Merry and not much else. The only conflicts that were memorable were internal ones.
Would you be willing to try another one of Charlotte Hill’s performances?
No. How in the world can you narrate a book in an American accent, and then give American characters European accents? So confusing and totally unbelievable. Complete let-down.
Do you think A Shiver of Light needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes. This ending was very underwhelming. If this was the finale, it left too much undone and left the listener very unsatisfied.
Any additional comments?
Find a narrator who can embody the characters and give the appropriate voices needed. So what if a narrator can switch accents if the accent is totally unrelatable to the character.
