Historia
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

My favorite stories
Revisado: 11-24-24
My favorite stories are contained in Martian Chronicles (such as There Will Come Soft Rains). I’m used to hearing the stories as standalone short stories so to hear them in chronological order gives new perspective. With some of the stories taking place in 2026….eeps!!

Historia
Guy Montag is a fireman. In his world, where television rules and literature is on the brink of extinction, firemen start fires rather than put them out. His job is to destroy the most illegal of commodities, the printed book, along with the houses in which they are hidden. Montag never questions the destruction and ruin his actions produce, returning each day to his bland life and wife, Mildred, who spends all day with her television "family."

Eye-opening
Revisado: 07-28-21
You might ask what’s so eye-opening about this book and I’ll be happy to explain. The movie Secret if NIMH came out when I was born so it’s been in my life forever, I know that movie backwards and forwards, but I had never read the book it was based on. I decided it was time and upon listening to book, it was quite eye-opening how different they were. The general storyline was the same, however characters who had major parts in the movie had smaller parts in the book and characters who had larger parts in the book either didn’t make the movie or had smaller parts. Many events were changed too (typical of movies, but I never knew how much was changed). The book is absolutely fantastic, I couldn’t stop listening. I think everyone should read it at some point. I’ve always loved the movie, now I can add to the book to the things I love.

Historia
Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

It’s a good starting point
Revisado: 06-16-21
I had gotten this book because it was recommended by someone in a group I’m in, they said it was life changing. I could see that if you know nothing about diet culture or social marketing, it could be quite eye opening, but for someone like me that Hs already done a ton of research throughout the years and is highly skeptical of everything diet related, it was basically the same information that I’ve heard 1000 times already. She made some good points, so if you’ve never done any kind of research in regards to food, this is good for you. If you’ve already heard everything, it’s the same information again.

Welcome back Ian
Revisado: 05-04-21
It’s good to hear Ian’s voice again. I like the casualness of the podcast. It feels like a friend telling you trivia and stories. I very much enjoy the background of Victoria and it’s people, it sets up the location well for the stories to come.
