Historia
When the body of a suicide victim disappears at West Point Military Academy in 1831, only to be discovered hours later missing its heart, the Academy calls on retired detective Gus Landor to investigate. Landor is something of a legend among his peers, noted for an uncanny, Holmesian ability to read people. When Edgar Allan Poe, a new cadet, comes forth with his own cryptic conclusion—that the man Landor is looking for is a poet—Landor is intrigued and enlists Poe as his assistant.

Historia
In September of 1892, Oscar Wilde and his family retreated to the idyllic Norfolk countryside for a holiday. His wife, Constance, has every reason to be happy: two beautiful sons, a stellar reputation as an advocate for progressive causes, and a delightfully charming and affectionate husband and father, who is perhaps the most famous man in England. But as an assortment of houseguests arrive, including an aristocratic young wannabe poet named Lord Alfred Douglas, Constance gradually—and then all at once—comes to see that her husband's heart is elsewhere.

whimsical but actually grapples with tough life questions such as commitment, family, friendship, and ultimately: what does a good marriage look like, and how do you know when you have it?

OMG, where are the editors??
Revisado: 02-05-25
This could have been a perfectly charming short story or novella. The beauty of the Ibo language and the peeks into another culture were wonderful. But the pacing! The repetitive, contrived scenes where the main character went on and on and ON about her neuroses, and above all, the over use of phrases: how many times did someone "kiss her/his teeth"?! After gritting my teeth through most of it I finally gave up .

The story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is very difficult to describe. Usually we give some information about the audiobook, but in this case we think that would spoil the listening. We think it's important that you start to listen without knowing what it is about.

I put off reading this because I thought it would be too painful
Revisado: 02-18-24
it was at once more harrowing, more devastating, and more beautiful than I could have imagined. The guilessness of the main character lulls you along, so that the ending, when it comes, is even more piercing. Read it

Historia
Evelyn Waugh's most celebrated work is a memory drama about the intense entanglement of the narrator, Charles Ryder, with a great Anglo-Catholic family. Written during World War II, the story mourns the passing of the aristocratic world Waugh knew in his youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities; in so doing it also provides a profound study of the conflict between the demands of religion and the desires of the flesh.
