Wonderful and heartwarming!

I loved this in-depth story that took me from the beginning of their friendship through the development of them learning who they were individually. It's a fully developed story of these individuals and I loved every minute of it! And I just discovered there is a short follow-up to it called The Next Chapters; I've already downloaded it and I can't wait to get started!

In 1899 two women from very different backgrounds are about to embark on a journey together - one that will take them from the Old World to the New, from the 19th century into the 20th, and from the comfort and familiarity of England to the rigors of Western Canada, where challenges await at every turn. The journey begins simply for Kicker Stuart when she leaves her home village to take employment as hostler and farrier at Grindleshire Academy for Young Ladies. But when Kicker falls in love with a teacher, Madelyn Bristow, it radically alters the course of her tranquil life.

Beautiful!
Revisado: 04-05-24
What a wonderful story of the epic journey of two young gay women in the latter 19th century. They courageously begin a journey from their birthplace of England to the unknown world of Canada, where they hope to settle in a life where they can be together.
I was swept up into the story and couldn't stop listening; it was so well put together, plus, the narrator did an outstanding job! I wished the book did not have to come to an end - it was a beautiful story!

A great read with fantastic narration!
Revisado: 02-20-24
The author did an amazing job with the meticulous research needed to have been done to write this wonderful book. Plus, Florence Howard's flawless, mellifluous narration was the icing on the proverbial cake -- I loved her use of accents and intonations.

Historia
Anidyr Bycall is frozen in her past, regretting words never spoken to the woman she loves and the one impulsive act that cost her all her dreams. Running from the courts of public and academic opinion in Fairbanks, she has landed in Key West. The nights are hot but she is colder than the glaciers she once explored. When a few innocent questions raise Ani's doubts about what really happened three years ago, she realizes she may have a chance to clear her name and reclaim her career. But there's no data to suggest that Eve has thawed and that the fire they once shared can be rekindled.

A web of deceit!
Revisado: 02-20-24
I loved it, this was a great story! There had to be so much research put into it for the background, and it certainly was not the usual trope for this genre.
Once it got to the part that revealed the punchline of the occurrence that took place, I couldn't put it down; I had to stay up and listen to the rest of it, as I fought sleep LOL!
And, of course, narration by Abby Craden was wonderful, as usual.

Fantastic read!
Revisado: 01-18-24
What a fantastic read! It took me in a direction totally different from what I had expected. It was funny and enticing, plus the narrators did an excellent job; and I couldn't wait to hit play again after having to pause to deal with daily mundanities such as working!
I have read a couple of Melissa Lenhardt's other books and must say that she certainly knows how to weave an excellent tale; she is now one of my favorite authors!

Historia
In this Hugo-winner from Connie Willis, when too many jumps back to 1940 leave 21st century Oxford history student Ned Henry exhausted, a relaxing trip to Victorian England seems the perfect solution. But complexities like recalcitrant rowboats, missing cats, and love at first sight make Ned's holiday anything but restful - to say nothing of the way hideous pieces of Victorian art can jeopardize the entire course of history.

OMG - Boring!
Revisado: 10-23-23
It was totally boring up until the very end of chapter 16, when there's approximately 8 hours and 37 minutes left of this 20-hour and 58 minute book! I believe that's the point where details of the second séance begin, and that finally livens up the story. I assumed things would continue to pick up and be interesting from there onward; uh, no! Once the fun details of that second séance finish, it goes back to its boring quotes and dull details of the Victorian era!
Not wanting to be a quitter, I continued to struggle through -- now beginning to work on other things as I listened to this book half-heartedly. It was definitely a chore! I reassessed when there were finally only 4 hours and 12 minutes left: still boring as all get-out!
I love stories about time travel, but this one just went on and on with such boring and endless details about absolutely nothing! I can recall an actual guffaw once, and perhaps three other small chuckles in the entire book.
The narrator was excellent, but that alone could not hold my attention for 20+ hours of boring details. I did finally manage to finish listening to the entire book; but as stated previously, I was certainly doing other things that required attention to detail, such as filling out paperwork, etc! I tried!

It's also heartbreaking, at times.
I feel it was well-written, and the author did a great job narrating her story. It kept me interested and intrigued throughout. Another reviewer made a comment about the author being repetitive in her description of the plants, trees, etc. But I found that it placed me directly there, in that it made me see exactly what the surroundings were in a particular moment.

Historia
The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek have to scrap for everything - everything except books, that is. Thanks to Roosevelt's Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome's got its very own traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy's not only a book woman, however, she's also the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy's family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble.

Wonderful story!
Revisado: 08-24-22
I'd never heard of the Kentucky blue people before and I thought this was a wonderfully-written story. I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
The narrator, Katie Schorr, did a fantastic job. I read a few others' comments about their feeling that the accent wasn't right for the area. I had no expectations of hearing any particular accent, when I began the book. Instead, I was merely enthralled by the timbre of her voice & the emotion she was able to portray, along with the voices she did for the different characters.
A big thumbs-up for this book & narrator!
