Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Captivating Listen
Revisado: 07-17-24
If you liked The Goldfinch, this book is similar. Young boy growing up in not so great circumstances, making terrible choices, yet inside he knows there’s more.
I wish we had just a little more story at the end. I thought it ended quite abruptly.

Historia
On May 24, 1869 a one-armed Civil War veteran, John Wesley Powell, and a ragtag band of nine mountain men embarked on the last great quest in the American West. The Grand Canyon, not explored before, was as mysterious as Atlantis - and as perilous. The 10 men set out from Green River Station, Wyoming Territory, down the Colorado in four wooden rowboats. Ninety-nine days later, six half-starved wretches came ashore near Callville, Arizona.

I really enjoyed this book. It captured the imagination of being right on the river. I can’t even imagine how they made it. As Powell said, they were extremely lucky.
I listened on 1.2 speed and the narrator sounded much better to me.

Historia
The Brave Cowboy is a classic of modern Western literature. It follows Jack Burns, a loner at odds with modern civilization. He rides a feisty chestnut mare across the New West—a once beautiful land now smothered beneath airstrips and superhighways. An "anarchist cowboy," he lives by a personal code of ethics that sets him on a collision course with the keepers of law and order. After a prison breakout plan goes awry, he finds himself and his horse, Whisky, pursued across the desert towards the mountains that lead to Mexico, and to freedom.

More history than story
Revisado: 10-16-23
First off, I almost didn’t get halfway through. I could barely get past the female narrator. Her voice and tone was like she was reading a fairy tale to children. If it had not switched partway through I wouldn’t have finished it. The rest of the book was okay. I learned things I didn’t know about the beginning of the FBI and certainly about the Osage and more of life in the 1920’s.

Historia
The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, Timothy Egan tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, he does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes.

Revisado: 09-25-23
This book really put into perspective just how bad the dust bowl was. I had to pause the book and look at images and then just shake my head. It’s really hard to imagine anyone surviving at all.
There is also unbiased information on the farming practices and how/why govt involvement began. I like that he leaves it up to the reader to make their own conclusions.

Acclaimed author Jonathan Rosen’s haunting investigation of the forces that led his closest childhood friend, Michael Laudor, from the heights of brilliant promise to the forensic psychiatric hospital where he has lived since killing the woman he loved. A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand—and fail to understand—mental illness.

Fantastic book
Revisado: 05-10-23
This book is so much to process. But it brings up the important questions of how to care for people with severe mental illness. There is no easy answer, but it is clear that some things must change for the safety of people. How to do that well needs to be discussed and laws may need to change.
This book is so beautifully written. I highly recommend.

Historia
It’s the summer of 1994, and all Maeve Murray wants are good final exam results so she can earn her ticket out of the wee Northern Irish town she has grown up in during the Troubles—away from her crowded home, the silence and sadness surrounding her sister’s death, and most of all, away from the simmering violence of her divided community. And as a first step, Maeve’s taken a summer job in a local shirt factory working alongside Protestants with her best friends, kind, innocent Caroline Jackson and privileged and clever Aoife O’Neill.

Historia
Tom Felton’s adolescence was anything but ordinary. His early rise to fame in beloved films like The Borrowers catapulted him into the limelight, but nothing could prepare him for what was to come after he landed the iconic role of the Draco Malfoy, the bleached blonde villain of the Harry Potter movies. For the next ten years, he was at the center of a huge pop culture phenomenon and yet, in between filming, he would go back to being a normal teenager trying to fit into a normal school. Speaking with great candor and his signature humor, Tom shares his experience.

Historia
Featuring a preface by C. S. Lewis biographer and editor Walter Hooper, Richard Platt’s As One Devil to Another takes up where the legendary Narnia author’s Screwtape Letters left off. In this gripping work, senior devil Slashreap corresponds with his protégé Scardagger. As Satan’s underlings exchange dark musings, light is shed on human failings, the nature of evil, and God’s divine intent.
