Historia
What do you do when there are no borders? When the lines you thought existed simply vanish? How do you plant your feet to make a stand when you no longer know what side you’re on? The war has come home. For over forty years, Art Keller has been on the front lines of America’s longest conflict: The War on Drugs. His obsession to defeat the world’s most powerful, wealthy, and lethal kingpin—the godfather of the Sinaloa Cartel, Adán Barrera—has left him bloody and scarred, cost him the people he loves, even taken a piece of his soul.

Engrossing!
Revisado: 04-18-25
The 3rd in the trilogy. Detailed, comprehensive and engaging. This book (and the two before) are extremely well written. It covers the saga of Art Keller, from his days in Vietnam and the CIA up to the present as director of the DEA. The backdrop is the ongoing drug war in the US as it relates to Mexico and Central America. Some of the characters are psychopaths but some are relatable and sympathetic. I thoroughly enjoyed all three books.

Historia
Kelly Sundberg’s husband, Caleb, was a funny, warm, supportive man and a wonderful father to their little boy Reed. He was also vengeful and violent. But Sundberg did not know that when she fell in love, and for years told herself he would get better. It took a decade for her to ultimately accept that the partnership she desired could not work with such a broken man. In her remarkable book, she offers an intimate record of the joys and terrors that accompanied her long, difficult awakening, and presents a haunting, heartbreaking glimpse into why women remain too long in dangerous relationships.

Mediocre
Revisado: 11-25-24
I'm hard pressed to believe this woman has an MFA in writing. The story is disjointed, repetitive, and boring. Her obsession with manically repeating phrases is irritating and juvenile. The lists that she cited throughout the story are equally off-putting. Usually these stories are enjoyable, particularly if there is a happy ending. I couldn't wait for this to be over.

Struggling to finish
Revisado: 12-04-21
I had high hopes for this book based on the subject matter and some of the reviews. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it and it's very difficult to finish. The story is completely dragging and does not hold my attention. I will finish it because I used a credit to buy it but I have definitely read more interesting books. I cannot recommend this book at all.

Historia
When Charlotte married the wealthy widower Paul, it caused a ripple of gossip in their small lakeside town. They have a charmed life together, despite the cruel whispers about her humble past and his first marriage. But everything starts to unravel when she discovers a young woman’s body floating in the exact same spot where Paul’s first wife tragically drowned. At first, it seems like a horrific coincidence, but the stranger in the lake is no stranger. Charlotte saw Paul talking to her the day before, even though Paul tells the police he’s never met the woman.

I listened to the first couple of hours and hoped that it would get better. I found the main character helpless and irritating. I almost never stop listening but this book just dragged so I gave up.

I absolutely loved this story. Told from two different perspectives from the two main characters. Devastating, heart wrenching and honest portrayal of one of the biggest issues society struggles with today.

Historia
On Christmas Eve, 2017, Tess Henry was found dead in a dumpster in Las Vegas. Tess was a 28-year-old new mother, a former honor roll student, and a high school basketball player from suburban Roanoke, Virginia, a place ravaged by the national opioid crisis. The New York Times best-selling author Beth Macy chronicled Tess and her mom, Patricia, through Tess' harrowing, years-long battle to recover from heroin addiction in her award-winning book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company That Addicted America.

Exhausting and heartbreaking
Revisado: 04-08-20
This story is heartbreaking for the obvious reasons. A white girl of privilege destroys her life, as well as those around her, with her descent into heroin addiction, and crystal meth, Xanax and pretty much anything else she can get her hands on. It's exhausting because both her mother (Patricia) who is featured in the story, as well as the author, go to Herculean lengths to minimize and mitigate the horrendous decisions made by Tess, over and over. Nothing is ever her fault. It's the system, the treatment providers, her friends, her son's father etc etc. Not surprisingly, the story ends badly for Tess . Based on the tone of this story, you would think she should be nominated for sainthood.
I've worked with addicts for 25 years. Yes, addiction sucks. Yes, it's demeaning, demoralizing and destructive to everyone it touches. In my opinion, a much more interesting story would be to look at why some people get sober and have success in recovery. I can say with absolute certainty, enabling them, and justifying and minimizing their disastrous decisions isn't the answer.
