Revisado: 09-16-24
Recently picked up this, and anothwr book from an author I dodn't know on an Audible 2 for 1 sale. The other was awful, but this more than made up for it - an interesting magic system, compelling characters, and a setting I'm hoping to see a lot more of in book 2. Speaking of, the next three volumes are already up for pre-order, so not a huge wait there. Give it a try!

Historia
The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Historia
Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Meh
Revisado: 09-28-22
The past few Dresden novels have shown a marked increase in Butcher's writing skills, but this fell quite short of those standards. Every step of the plot was predictable, and without Marsters' excellent narration giving it that extra bit of character, it was a slog (even with its < 3.5 hour runtime). Bob's voice was particularly difficult to listen to.

Follow Asterios as his life of perpetual failure suddenly takes an unexpected turn, after just seconds short of his death, a powerful summon answers his call and saves his life.

Horrible narration
Revisado: 12-23-21
I'm going to try reading this in KU, because the story sounds pretty interesting. Only made it about 5 minutes into the audio, though - the narration is atrocious. Robert wasn't terrible; I'd at least put him in the acceptable category. Alyssa, though... she needs a new profession; that is possibly the worst voice acting I've ever heard.

Revisado: 10-05-21
Waited a very long time for this, and was ultimately disappointed. Despite rewriting chunks of it for the audible release, the quality has not improved since the first book. Almost every problem is solved with a deus ex machina "I bought an artifact from the shop weeks ago for this exact scenario" trope. Which, of course, is presented in the same, smugly clever manner each and every time.
Take a shot each time he compulsively states the exact point cost of a passingly-referenced ability or item, adds metric-to-imperial unit conversions for a random value, or says someone was "shocked to their core!" and you won't survive the first 20 minutes.

Ok read, but very unbalanced
Revisado: 09-15-21
Perfectly-tailored loot rains from the sky, and a sub level-10 character repeatedly takes down (or at least fends off) level 67 enemies. The stats are irrelevant to the point that it would have been more enjoyable if the litRPG elements had been entirely removed; as-is, the reader is just frustrated every time we're reminded of how unbalanced everything is.
That said, the narration was pretty good.

After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage, and the threat of a betrayal by Dalinar’s crafty ally Taravangian looms over every strategic move. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals.

Revisado: 12-19-20
Hard to top Dalinar's arc, so I'm not surprised I didn't enjoy this quite as much as Oathbringer. Some pieces also felt rushed (particularly Shalon's sections), but overall, a very enjoyable book. Navani and Raboniel were particularly well done, in my opinion.

Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die.

Historia
The year is 2245, and the world has undergone explosive growth in multiple industries. The age of Virtual Reality came long ago, opening up new fields for people to enjoy and seek employment. There were even those that chose to sacrifice their physical bodies, becoming digital existences that lived within Internet communities. But with the age of VR, everyone still dreamed of that next step, the next level of adventure.

I wanted to like this
Revisado: 10-05-20
Started off interesting, and had some decent moments, but I just never felt invested in the characters. There are no stakes and, as I read through the series, this issues just because more and more pronounced. In book 1, death has negligible repercussions. In book 2, I started to have hope when things moved into the real world, but later on they began cloning themselves to essentially have unlimited lives. At least this required an experience sacrifice, but they just created an exp farm to bypass the cost. Later on, another race provides enhanced cloning tech, essentially negating the issue altogether.
I could overlook this, if it were the only issue. However... the main character has very overpowered items and abilities, and can just magic his way out of any situation thrown at him. And yet, he continues to make aggravatingly-poor choices, given the tools at his disposal. The most glaring example is his passive cultivation, and access to the time affinity. He never considers combining the two with his autopilot function...
I appreciate the effort, and there were a few neat ideas here, but all in all, ot just wasn't worth the time investment.
