Historia
On a sunlit morning in September 1978, a sloop drifts aimlessly across the Chesapeake Bay. The cabin reveals signs of a struggle, and “classified” documents, live 9 mm cartridges, and a top-secret “burst” satellite communications transmitter are discovered aboard. But where is the boat’s owner, former CIA officer John Paisley? One man may hold the key to finding out. Tennent “Pete” Bagley was once a rising star in America’s spy aristocracy, and many expected he’d eventually become CIA director.

The timelines are too confusing
Revisado: 08-22-24
I feel like this was a perfect spy book when handed in, but someone lost the chapter numbers and just guessed when it was assembled. I've read all these books, and I was worried this was fiction due to how confusing it got quickly, umt he mentioned Trigon.
For some reason, the narrative continues to jump back to a dinner party somewhere in the middle of the timeline, which never pays off. Just makes me wonder what year we are in again, as it covers decades. Well narrated, though!

In this book, he tells of rampant corruption, payoffs, and bribes and of treachery and deceit and assassinations in the Vatican and of the biggest heist in mob history.

Entertainment, but not credible
Revisado: 02-27-23
This was entertaining for sure. All the great mafia tropes were there. Spoiler... He claims to have personally handled the murder of pope jp1 8n the late 70s. Then, takes credit for the Luthansa job. I think I'd have heard of this guy before. The narration is also rather cartoony, but it grew on me.

Revisado: 04-06-21
Why aren't there more audible titles from her. Best book I've read in the last ten years, and I've read hundreds. What an adventure! It's a pioneer story and amazing insight in frontier life. Here is an example - she discovered these things towns were putting in called roads. Yes, Rome had roads quite before. Her writing is clear and thoughtful and most importantly... Not dated. Sure, what she she's is 150 years old, but her writing voice could be from yesterday.

A bit too much
Revisado: 03-29-21
Joel plays off his persona of being a self obsessed jerk. But, after 5 or 6 hours of nothing but that... And I realized he's probably just a self obsessed jerk. While it was fun at the beginning, it was very tough to finish.

Historia
Chrissie Hynde, the songwriter and front woman of The Pretenders in its various incarnations, has for 35 years been one of the most admired and adored and imitated figures in rock. This long-awaited memoir tells her life story in full and utterly fascinating detail, from her all-American Ohio '50s childhood to her classic baby-boomer seduction by the rock of the '60s to her sojourn in the crucible of punk that was '70s London to her instant emergence with her band, The Pretenders, in 1980 into stardom as a frontwoman and songwriter.

Excellent narrator is distraction
Revisado: 07-30-20
The book and story is amazing, and this aspect didn't stop me. Here's the thing, Rosanna Arquettes voice is too singular and recognizable. As I listen to the story, I am imagining Rosanna Arquette in all these situations... Not chrissie. Her performance is amazing, and id like her in a fiction book, but her voice and known beauty really distracts me. Truly a first world problem. Again, the book is fantastic and well written. I don't even smell a ghost writer (Anthony Bozzo, I am looking in your direction)
It was disappointing how early in her career the story stops. Spoiler alert: the book spends half the time on her youth, and too little on her pretenders days. The book stops aftet their second album in the early 80s. We have so few voices of female rock stars and band leaders. She is so thoughtful that's its disappointing we don't get more of her time running the show. We see missing about 30 years from this narrative. It feels like it's part 1 of a 3 parter.

I was excited to hear Bob's story. However, it was actually Bob Newhart interviewing contemporary comedians. It was enjoyable and I listened to the whole thing. It needed MUCH more Bob Newhart, though.

[Contains explicit content] We often describe Sounds Like America as a road trip with comedians at the wheel. That's a loose metaphor for a "rollicking and slightly romanticised journey with funny weirdos hosting." However, this episode is actually literally about road trips and driving, and your host is none other than actually literally Reggie Watts.

Historia
In 2008 veteran journalist Evan Wright, acclaimed for his New York Times best-selling book Generation Kill and co-writer of the Emmy-winning HBO series it spawned, began a series of conversations with super-criminal Jon Roberts, star of the fabulously successful documentary Cocaine Cowboys. Those conversations would last three years, during which time Wright came to realize that Roberts was much more than the de-facto “transportation chief” of the Medellin Cartel during the 1980s, much more than a facilitator of a national drug epidemic.

Historia
In 1974, at the age of 17, author Glenn Berger served as "schlepper" and apprentice to the legendary recording engineer Phil Ramone at New York City's A&R Studios, and was witness to music history on an almost daily and nightly basis as pop and rock icons such as Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Frank Sinatra, Burt Bacharach, Bette Midler, and James Brown performed their hit-making magic, honed their sound, strutted their stuff, bared their souls, and threw epic tantrums.

terrific and compelling look behind the soundboard
Revisado: 04-16-18
this is a very very complaint for me, but I wish it was longer. I can only imagine he has hundreds more of these stories. initially, I wondered why it took him 40 years to tell his story. it was published in 2017, but the bulk of the action tales place in early 70s
However, that time have him the gift of reflection and insight he now has as a professional therapist. looking back at those halcyon days of the early 70s, I can only think those artists needed a good therapist as mich as they needed a great engineer.
quick clarification for those who don't know the business. The engineer, which Berger was, works the board... He comes with the studio. a producer is one who works the songs, like "that intro was great. let's add 8 more bars to it. take the third verse and let's swap it with them second verse right before the chorus"
don't worry, it's. it a technical tale of faders and equalizers. it is, of course, about the people. He got to mentor under one of the greatest engineers of all time, Phil Ramone. his memory is keen, and he doesn't hold back his feelings of contempt or appreciation. sure, we expected Dylan to be stand-offish ... but his Paul Simon stories were the most compelling to me.
Lastly, the book has one of the most important things you can possibly get in an audiobook: it is read by the author himself. with this, you get the inflection and pathos you won't necessarily get with a professional narrator.

All Blutrich wanted was to lay low, make the club a success, and put his criminal acts behind him. But the Mafia got involved, and soon the FBI came knocking. Scores became wildly popular, in part thanks to Blutrich's ability to successfully bend the rules of adult entertainment. Unfortunately for Blutrich, it would all soon implode.
