Very enjoyable
Revisado: 05-22-20
I listened to the 4 books in this series back to back. I really enjoyed this story but didn’t love it. The narration is fantastic and probably the main reason I continued with it. It’s a good story that keeps you entertained and connected to the end. I will say I’m over the “boy/girl” trope in these books. I got tired of the endless stereotype that “girls” spend all their time worrying about clothes, make up, spa days and their appearance and that “boys” are clueless about it all. It felt that every time one of the female character was spoken about it was prefaced with her body size and desirability. Considering this was a book about being a hero not a beauty pageant participant I found that odd and unnecessary. There were at least strong female characters throughout and that was a pleasant change from many books in this genre. I would recommend this series, if someone was after something light and fun.

Meet Alex, a photographer on a holiday with his family in the south of France. Meet Abe, a music producer with a baby on the way. Two men - both fathers, husbands, and sons - take us on a journey you will never forget. The finest actors of their generation, Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (Sunday in the Park with George) and Tony Award nominee Tom Sturridge (1984), had audiences roaring to their feet during the sold-out Broadway engagement. Now Sea Wall / A Life, a dramatic exploration of transformative love and devastating loss, comes to Audible.

Maybe it was just the day or place I listened to this book but it really hit me. I was going to give up after about 10 minutes as I wasn’t really understanding what was happening but then it just sucked me in and I was fully absorbed till the end. I went in knowing nothing about this story, which I recommend. It was so human and relatable. Beautiful work and terrific narration. I will definitely relisten at some point which is very rare for me.

Historia
The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

A terrific and strong start to this series!
Revisado: 05-22-20
I really enjoyed this story and the start to the series. The characters all felt very real and human right from the beginning, with their personal stories unfolding throughout. The crime was nuanced and it was difficult to know how to really feel about it all, with all sorts of “gray” thrown into the story. Really enjoyed this book.

Sergeant DC Smith and his team have to tread carefully as they investigate what took place, and Smith himself has to confront some difficult memories. Others, meanwhile, seem intent on getting him to leave the force altogether.

A thoughtful quiet continuation of this series.
Revisado: 05-22-20
I’m really enjoying the thoughtful way these stories are written and narrated. I feel like these are probably closer to real policing rather than the gory crime ridden, flashy, harden police stories that are the norm. I really like that the story shows the emotional damage dealing with certain crimes and the questions those involved ask themselves. I will definitely be continuing with this series.

A taster for the series
Revisado: 05-22-20
This is a small and light take but I think it’s probably a great taster for the series, which I’m about to start. Thank you for the freebie, that was a lovely gesture. Michael also chats a little about the book and the backstory which I enjoyed. The Riyria Series by this author is one of my absolute favourites so I’m looking forward to this series. Reynolds as the narrator was, as per normal, outstanding.

An interesting mystery
Revisado: 06-19-16
I really enjoyed this book. I liked how all the characters were mostly normal with a little odd thrown in. It made them relatable and believable. It was so refreshing to have a lead female character who wasn't "a supermodel who doesn't know how gorgeous she is!" I liked that she struggled with her appearance and got tired and overwhelmed. She is a little socially awkward which fitted into her chosen lifestyle - living alone in a remote area. I will definitely continue with this series.

Historia
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Historia
When siblings Dan and Hayley Daley inherit their late grandmother's derelict Victorian farmhouse, it seems like a dream come true. All they have to do is fix the place up and sell it for a tidy profit! Except - as anyone who has renovated an old house knows - things are never that easy. The walls are rapidly crumbling around them, the architect is a certified lunatic, the budget is spiraling...and then there's the disturbingly intelligent cow to worry about.

A predictable story, more like an adult fairy tale. You have suspend belief in many parts. But it was fun and light. I enjoyed it and would listen to more by this author and narrators (it is my second book in fact - I listened to Fat Chance also).

Historia
Indy Savage is a former wild child (okay, maybe not so "former") and current used-bookstore owner. Lee Nightingale is a former bad boy and now runs a private investigation service. Toss together a quiet barista with a not-so-lawful side-business, a crazy Vietnam Vet, a pothead, a drag queen, family and friends who will not mind their own business, a few stun guns, and a bag of diamonds, and mix them all up with some shootings, a high-speed chase and car bombs exploding, then hang on for your first wild Rock Chick ride.

Dreadful - couldn't finish it
Revisado: 06-19-16
I gave this book to about the 7 hour mark before finally bailing on it. It is quite simply dreadful. I was constantly cringing throughout the book. First off I will say the narrator did a good job with material she had to work with, I would listen to her again with another author. I found the book to be ridiculous. I was expecting a light listen but this was just stupid. The lead character Indy is a complete dingbat. The books storyline is outdated and sexist. It was uncomfortable to listen to some of it, particularly the parts where she clearly states No to sex and intimacy and the male lead, Lee, ignores her, basically tells her it doesn't matter her wishes, she really means yes. Ugh, really, feels so date rapey. How about giving us a character with a brain, who is able to advocate for herself sexually (I mean come on the premise she has wanted him for years and finally has her chance), a male who isn't a sexist asshole, and someone who actually is affected by the kidnapping and murders instead of wondering if her lipstick is still good and her underwear is pretty enough. All the surrounding characters are boring and stereotypical. Can't believe I wasted 7 hours on this book.
