The protagonist “Kitty” is so calculating in her desperation for $ to save her family, that unfortunately, the reader is left with only occasional moments of actually rooting for her. I actually didn’t like her through many parts of the novel. I say this, understanding that Kitty’s options and requirements for marriage were the common challenge of many women during this era. However, while I don’t need an abundance of heavy sex scenes in my romances, caring more for the story, this book barely brushed into the romance genre until 1/2 way through and then it was just a remote touch. Although there was a bit of a Pride and Prejudice vibe. - Kitty had the intelligence and wit of Elizabeth Bennet - she somehow lacked her warmth and integrity. I appreciated the author’s desire to put a fresh spin on a romance novel and open the reader to a different perspective of falling in love. That said, the main characters needed to display attraction, appreciation for the other and hints of warmth for each other, not only their respective families, much earlier in the story. Clearly I didn’t love this book. It passed the time though. I should mention that I thought the narrator did a very nice job differentiating the characters with credible and appropriate voices.

This was perhaps the best of the 3 novel trilogy encompassing the adventures and progressing love story of Lavinia Lake and Tobias March. They are a more mature couple having each experienced loss before but with each novel their love deepens, along with a growing respect they share for their respective investigative skills. The same narrator, Josephine Bailey, is used for the 3 novels and she does a wonder job bringing each character to life with her amazing ability to create unique and appropriate voices for each. I loved by book three that the returning characters mixed with new character introductions and a sharp storyline left me wanting more after the closing chapter. This is a trilogy where it is very important to read the books in order.
