Historia
Lily Jo McGrother, born Timothy McGrother, is a girl. But being a girl is not so easy when you look like a boy. Especially when you’re in the eighth grade. Dunkin Dorfman, birth name Norbert Dorfman, is dealing with bipolar disorder and has just moved from the New Jersey town he’s called home for the past 13 years. This would be hard enough, but the fact that he is also hiding from a painful secret makes it even worse. One summer morning, Lily Jo McGrother meets Dunkin Dorfman, and their lives forever change.

I felt this book really encapsulated what the characters were going through. it was well paced and left me feeling like I got a whole story start to finish. I couldn't put it down.

Thought provoking and beautiful; human.

I came in not with low expectations but simply none. In fact, when I had heard that Hank Green had wrote a book with key themes of social commentary on fame and the internet and information consumption, I thought it was a non-fiction tome of essays and lectures that would leave me feeling bad about my own personal use of social media and compel me to turn off for a while and focus on compost or something eco practical. Not that that would have been a bad book either. But when I heard it was a fiction novel of the sci-fi genre I was both apprehensive and curious. Science fiction isn't my go to. I'm more of a fantasy young adult reader. But my husband read the book and said "God damn she's just like you." And now I had to read it. So I did. And I loved it. Don't research this book too much before hand. Don't think about it too long just dive in, and go for it. At first I was waiting for the "fall for the guy" romance plot or the "out of this world I volunteer as tribute" kind of set up. And then it didn't happen. Everything that was so absolutely remarkable about this book... was so mundanely normal and played out in such an incredibly human way, that I actually tried to look the characters up on social media. Just in case. Not only was it captivating, but following along was unchallenging. The thoughts and motivations of the characters were believable and well written.
And then I finished the book. And now I have... so many questions. And how dare Hank Green, that wonderful man, how dare he make me feel feelings in such a casual and human way without over doing it.
