Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

This is a great read by an excellent narrator. Goes much deeper than the title might suggest.

Historia
World-renowned Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology, David Nutt, breaks down the science and effect of alcohol on our health, mood, sleep and productivity how it travels through our bodies and brains and explains on a practical level how we can make changes to positively impact our relationship with it and understanding of it, thereby improving our quality of life for the long-term. He examines what the future holds for this normalised drug that governs our society and lives but is becoming increasingly unpopular due to its detrimental impact on our well-being.

Balanced View
Revisado: 09-06-21
This book presents both the risks and the benefits of alcohol consumption with balance and precision. The author does not take sides for or against consuming alcohol, but rather points out in appropriately clinical fashion what happens to the human body over both the short and long terms when alcohol is consumed. The book examines a range of research and offers practical guidelines for people who want to enjoy alcohol without undue risk of damaging to health or wellness. The author will share the facts, but he won't judge you.

Practical and useful
Revisado: 09-06-21
As a close observer of mental wellness in myself and in family members over more than two decades, I found this book to be uniquely helpful in attending to the ups and downs of mood and cognition. The content is well-grounded in science, and the approach to managing one's own mental health is highly practical. An exceptionally valuable contribution to the literature.

This book is what it says it is: a manifesto
Revisado: 04-28-21
The author's confrontational approach to her subject detracts only somewhat from her message. I am an "older" in the author's terminology, and while my experience with aging seems to be quite different from hers, I am all for changing the way that "society" (such as it is) views and responds to aging. The author's facts are solidly researched and well presented, but she leaves little room for doubt that she is right, and, if you disagree with any part of her argument, that you are wrong. I listened to this audiobook concurrently with another book focusing on aging, Frank Ostaseski's "The Five Invitations." The approach of the two books could not be different. Ostaseski emphasizes the universality of the experience of aging, and of dying, while Applewhite's overall hypothesis is premised on the existence of "olders" as a separate identity group, and of "society" and "capitalism" as discrete forces deliberately aligned against just outcomes. Ostaseski's and Applewhite's perspectives certainly can and do coexist, but a dose of humility would not have diluted the power of Applewhite's arguments in the slightest.

Historia
Today's "machine-learning" systems, trained by data, are so effective that we've invited them to see and hear for us - and to make decisions on our behalf. But alarm bells are ringing. Systems cull résumés until, years later, we discover that they have inherent gender biases. Algorithms decide bail and parole - and appear to assess black and white defendants differently. We can no longer assume that our mortgage application, or even our medical tests, will be seen by human eyes. And autonomous vehicles on our streets can injure or kill.

Brilliant exposition of a complex issue
Revisado: 04-03-21
This is a defining text on the alignment problem. It explores a wide spectrum of issues that we will all confront together as artificial intelligence and machine learning become more ingrained in our daily lives. The book is technically rather complex (at least to my layperson's ind), but it describes the issues with clarity.

Historia
It is an axiom of American life that advantage should be earned through ability and effort. Even as the country divides itself at every turn, the meritocratic ideal - that social and economic rewards should follow achievement rather than breeding - reigns supreme. Both Democrats and Republicans insistently repeat meritocratic notions. Meritocracy cuts to the heart of who we are. It sustains the American dream.

Insightful but short on practical solutions
Revisado: 04-03-21
This book sets out a solid statistical case for a legitimate and significant social problem. To my mind, the solutions proposed by the author are not very convincing.

Elementary but essential
Revisado: 04-03-21
This is a content-rich summary of learning and thought about leadership. You'll get many different points of view, and you can decide what to take and what to leave. The goal is not to present a single "how-to" package but to explore a range of perspectives. I found it to be highly useful in reviewing and questioning my assumptions about my role as a leader.

Historia
It's difficult to ask anybody "how are you?" without hearing the word "busy" somewhere in their response. We feel overwhelmed by busyness because of the demands on our time: our inboxes and our to-do lists are bulging, a huge amount of people expect things from us and our organisations are trying to do more with fewer people. But it doesn't have to be that way. In reality, busyness isn't essential. Yes, there is a lot to do, but believing you're always busy because you have so much to do is both false and unhelpful.

Excellent advice
Revisado: 04-03-21
This book gets to the heart of why less busy activity can lead to both more accomplishment and greater well-being. The delivery is delightfully succinct, with not a word wasted. The content focuses on the practical but does not stop at the boundaries of the workday. Too much is too much whether it happens in our out of the office. Your attention is the fundamental tool that you will need to use to navigate your work and your life. Use it wisely.

Historia
Willis Wu doesn’t perceive himself as a protagonist even in his own life: He’s merely Generic Asian man. Sometimes he gets to be Background Oriental Making a Weird Face or even Disgraced Son, but he is always relegated to a prop. Yet every day he leaves his tiny room in a Chinatown SRO and enters the Golden Palace restaurant, where Black and White, a procedural cop show, is in perpetual production. He’s a bit player here, too, but he dreams of being Kung Fu Guy - the most respected role that anyone who looks like him can attain. At least that’s what he has been told.

Beautiful, imaginative, thought-provoking
Revisado: 01-10-21
This is an excellent read - thought-provoking, engrossing, and frequently hilarious. The story offers perspective on the experience of another racial minority group that has had its own unique experience with discrimination and injustice in the United States. A valuable contribution to our national dialog. Outstanding, completely convincing narration.
