Historia
When it comes to climate-change-inspired threats, it is rising sea levels we hear most about. But if the oceans are, as Herman Melville put it, “the tide-beating heart of the Earth”, rivers are its circulatory system. In the United States, there is no river more storied, symbolic, and vital than the Mississippi, and none, to use Mark Twain’s word, more lawless. The struggle to control it has been going on nearly as long as there has been human civilization on its banks, and the attendant drama and dangers have been memorialized by many writers.

Una historia de la Guerra Civil que no va a gustar a nadie [A Civil War Story That No One Will Like]

Historia

Historia
From the moment he took office as governor in 1928 to the day an assassin’s bullet cut him down in 1935, Huey Long wielded all but dictatorial control over the state of Louisiana. A man of shameless ambition and ruthless vindictiveness, Long orchestrated elections, hired and fired thousands at will, and deployed the state militia as his personal police force. And yet, paradoxically, as governor and later as senator, Long did more good for the state’s poor and uneducated than any politician before or since. Outrageous demagogue or charismatic visionary?

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Plot is burdened by a stereotypical recitation of southern court scenes. The murder case is just difficult to read. So full of holes. But read this for the marsh for an awe inspiring discovery of the natural world through the charmed and charming eyes of a young girl.

Historia
Hated and hailed, excoriated and revered, Abraham Lincoln was at the pinnacle of American power when secessionists gave no quarter in a clash of visions bound up with money, race, identity, and faith. In him we can see the possibilities of the presidency as well as its limitations. This book tells the story of Lincoln from his birth on the Kentucky frontier to his leadership during the Civil War to his tragic assassination: his rise, his self-education, his loves, his bouts of depression, his political failures, his deepening faith, and his persistent conviction that slavery must end.

Historical perspective
Revisado: 11-08-22
This timely book lays out the stakes involved in Lincoln’s war and the charater of a man who more than any other defined the nation. It is not a new history but it is a needed history. I learned in school fifty years ago that the civil war was fought over state’s rights. I learned that slavery was an institution regrettable but on its way to extinction. Bull. The southern vision was an expansive slave empire with an eye on central america and mexico. Lincoln is presented in full not sparing those quotes that are racist and difficult to read nor does it ignore his devotion to a moral conviction that slavery was wrong. And finally tempted by offers of peace if only he would betray the antislavery cause, he did not waver. Amid thr countless histories of Lincoln this stands out for its moral examination of a man who paid for his convictions with his life.

Headline is deceptive
Revisado: 02-03-20
Well researched procedural which puts a great emphasis on the ingenuity of the killer and the incompetence of his pursuers. The part that feels missing is the monstrous nature of his sick crimes. It is not ingenious so much as monstrous to kill people at random. In fact he was caught using the atm of a victim... not exactly meticulous. The writing is good and apart from the attempt to stretch the story to match a misguided premise it was a good read.

Egan leads us on an unconventional, freewheeling tour: from America's oldest continuously inhabited community, the Ancoma Pueblo in New Mexico, to the high kitsch of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where London Bridge has been painstakingly rebuilt stone by stone; from the fragile beauty of Idaho's Bitterroot Range to the gross excess of Las Vegas, a city built as though in defiance of its arid environment.

A spectacular rolling account peppered with brilliant story and ascerbic observation. Egan knows the West in all its natural beauty and corrupt politics. It is a primer in what went wrong, and what continues to be a failed vision of the West.
Brilliant.
