Interesting and Inspiring
Revisado: 07-31-24
I listened to this audio book. I found it interesting and inspiring. I wouldn't have, in a million years, wanted to do the raft trip in Africa the author did, but I found it fascinating to learn about her experience and the profound change it had on her. The audio book is narrated by the author which is always a plus. I recommend the book if you like memoirs or have any interest in river rafting or Africa.

Historia
The year was 1917. As a war raged across the world, young American women flocked to work, painting watches, clocks, and military dials with a special luminous substance made from radium. It was a fun job, lucrative and glamorous - the girls themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered head to toe in the dust from the paint. They were the radium girls. As the years passed, the women began to suffer from mysterious and crippling illnesses.

Way too detailed!
Revisado: 08-11-20
This book could have been interesting and worthwhile at about a quarter of the length.

Historia
Although Thomas Alva Edison was the most famous American of his time, and remains an international name today, he is mostly remembered only for the gift of universal electric light. His invention of the first practical incandescent lamp 140 years ago so dazzled the world - already reeling from his invention of the phonograph and dozens of other revolutionary devices - that it cast a shadow over his later achievements. In all, this near-deaf genius patented 1,093 inventions, not including others, such as the X-ray fluoroscope, that he left unlicensed for the benefit of medicine.

Too Bad
Revisado: 01-19-20
It's too bad the author chose to tell the story in reverse chronological order. It was supremely annoying.

Historia
From the perilous ocean crossing to the shared bounty of the first Thanksgiving, the Pilgrim settlement of New England has become enshrined as our most sacred national myth. Yet, as best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals in his spellbinding new book, the true story of the Pilgrims is much more than the well-known tale of piety and sacrifice; it is a 55-year epic that is at once tragic, heroic, exhilarating, and profound.

Way too Long
Revisado: 10-31-19
This book was very disappointing. Since it's titled Mayflower, I expected a lot more information about the Mayflower and not an endless amount of incredibly boring detail about King Phillip's War.

The number one New York Times best seller by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David McCullough rediscovers an important chapter in the American story that's "as resonant today as ever" (The Wall Street Journal) - the settling of the Northwest Territory by courageous pioneers who overcame incredible hardships to build a community based on ideals that would define our country.

Boring
Revisado: 08-04-19
Unless you are REALLY interested in the history of southern Ohio, I don't recommend this book. The title gives the impression that the book is of broader scope. My husband and I finished it, but we found it boring, not at all up to his usual standard. We have read many of his other books and enjoyed them.
