Doesn't live up to potential

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-30-11

The first half of the book is great. The mystery builds, and you find out what the great secret the Atoners have. Loved it.

The second half of the book just seems to flounder, never exploring the potential of the story. The Atoners take a background role and instead, we are back on earth exploring the daily lives of the witnesses and society as they deal with the news of what the Atoners have revealed. It's a great character study, but not really my cup of tea as far as sci-fi goes.

The narration is great and the story is not bad, just doesn't live up to the promise of the book's description, nor what I think it could have achieved. I gave it 3 stars.

disappointing and disgusting

In this book, I feel Piers Anthony has gone a bit too far in explicitly describing rape and oral sex scenes regarding children. It was pretty disgusting. I wish I could delete this book from my library. I have deleted it and the whole series from my computer.

dull and boring

wow. Spin had a lot of potential, but Axis flushed it all away.

This story had very little plot and it was more soap opera than sci-fi. It was all about the characters whining about stuff and being chased around and the hypotheticals were more of a background device. The ending was unsatisfactory too. I kept waiting for some sci-fi to happen and it never did.

And Scott Brick's over the top dramatic reading really gets on my nerves. His voice sounds like Jason Alexander (George Castanza from Seinfeld) trying to act like William Shatner. AAAAAAAAARRRGGG!!

I am never going to listen to a book narrated by Brick again.

boring rewrite

This book reminds me of one of those "clip show" tv shows where they clip together past scenes to make a new show when the writers are too lazy to come up with anything new.

This book is mostly a behind the scenes look at the known space short stories of Niven, but from the view of the ARM and Nessus. Like what they thought about Beowulf's journey to the center of the galaxy, or what happened after he encountered the antimatter system that destroyed the GP hull, etc. They are just all strung together in a mish mash with seemingly no plot to the story at all.

Very disappointed. Niven can do much better. I wonder if he even wrote any of it or just signed his name to it?

The plot is semi interesting. what ruins it for me is the Narrator, Scott Sowers. Man! He must be the worst narrator in the world. His intonation sounds like a bad actor reading a script out loud.

Listen to the sample before buying this.

Found it tedious

I got about halfway through this book and couldn't continue. The plot was so boring and inane, and the characters so shallow, that I kept losing track as my mind would wander off on other more interesting pursuits, like "gee that spot on the wall looks like a cookie"

Save your money.

Boring Junk

1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-25-08

OK, I like camp and old sci-fi serials (Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, etc) So I was looking forward to listening to the Lensmen series. I had always heard of the series as a classic but never read any of the books.

Man, was I disappointed. The characters are one dimensional cartoon characters, and the plots are boring and leave nothing to the imagination. This book is like a bad comic book. If the author had not taken his story so seriously, it might have been a bit of campy fun, but instead it becomes a chore to get through this book. The narrator with his overly dramatic and corny way of speaking make it even worse. Listen to the sample before getting this book.

Judaism and Animal Sacrifice

Total
1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-28-05

Uh, to claim that Judaism promotes vegetarianism is just more PETA propoganda.

How can these people be so blind?

God instituted ANIMAL sacrifices for the Hebrews. They slaughtered animals at their temple and the priests ate the meat! You can't read even one book in the Old Testament where someone is not sacrificing animals or eating meat.

This book is so far off base that it borders on the ridiculous.

PETA Strikes out

Total
1 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-28-05

PETA will go to any lengths to promote their radical views on animal rights. They have a web page where they try to claim that Jesus was a vegetarian, when the bible is clear that he as an observant jew not only ate lamb on passover, but also as YHWH he instituted the whole sacrificial system to the Jews. He also helped Peter catch fish and was described as eating fish on a few occasions. The New testament also mentions that it is OK to eat any kind of animal (the Jews had restrictions on shellfish and pork)

Acts 10:11 He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12 It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13 Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

This book is just more PETA propoganda.

If you want to be a vegetarian, then fine. But This book tries to make it look like Christianity or Judaism support it as the 'correct' way, when both religions clearly support eating of meat.
