Historia
When Elizabeth Neumann began her anti-terrorism career as part of President George W. Bush’s Homeland Security Counsel in the wake of the September 11 attacks, she expected to spend her life protecting her country from the threat of global terrorism. But as her career evolved, she began to perceive that the greatest threat to American security came not from religious fundamentalists in Afghanistan or Iraq but from white nationalists and radicalized religious fundamentalists within the very institution that was closest to her heart—the American evangelical church.

Can’t Recommend
Revisado: 05-04-25
There is little content in this book that I haven’t read somewhere else. Only the second chapter gave a different perspective on how individuals and groups are radicalized. For one chapter, I cannot not recommend this book.

Historia
Through the last 150 years of American history—from the post-reconstruction South and the mythic stories of cowboys in the West, to the present-day controversy over NFL protests and the backlash against the rise of women in politics—Ijeoma Oluo exposes the devastating consequences of white male supremacy on women, people of color, and white men themselves. Mediocre investigates the real costs of this phenomenon in order to imagine a new white male identity, one free from racism and sexism.

We need this history
Revisado: 03-10-25
In a time when powerful men are again trying to erase history, Ms Oluo courageously writes the story we all need to ever hope to heal as a nation. Her perspective as a Black Women recounting both past and current events offers truth as she and many others experience life. I am grateful for her teaching. Her words will go with me as I attempt to speak into the madness we now find ourselves in here in the US because we have never stood up to the bullies.

What do you do when you start to feel a shift and must decide if it’s time to make a change? When it comes to navigating big decisions about when to stay and go, how can we know for sure when the time is right? Though we enter and exit many rooms over the course of our life—jobs, relationships, communities, life stages—knowing how and when it’s time to leave is a decision that rarely has a clear answer.

Great Insight
Revisado: 11-29-24
…and how to leave. The author’s reading of their own work is not always good, however, this is not the case here. Ms Freeman adds so much, as though we were sitting together and working through life together. She helped me to understand why I had to leave my church after the fact and, by doing so brought me great peace. I am not alone. Thank you.

The Ending Redeemed the Book
Revisado: 07-18-24
I almost quit the book. When a main character in a book keeps making the same mistake over and over again, I usually stop reading. It feels like the author just wants to keep you going up and down so you stay with the book. For me, it’s a technique that is not at all creative. However, the last chapter and then the author’s words regarding the why of telling the story changed me. I’m so glad I stayed with it. I lost two friends in Vietnam and have not read a book or watched a movie about this horrific war; it was too painfully real to me. I was compelled to read this about the women. The book is clearly well researched and I will gladly recommend it to others.

Historia
Jesus' final days were full of risk. Every move he made was filled with anticipation, danger, and the potential for great loss or great reward. Jesus risked his reputation when he entered Jerusalem in a victory parade. He risked his life when he dared to teach in the Temple. His followers risked everything when they left behind their homes or anointed him with costly perfume. We take risks as we read and reread these stories, finding new meanings and new challenges.

Much needed insight!
Revisado: 06-15-24
In my theological studies, professors often said the reformers threw the baby out with the bathwater. Dr. Levine’s work, and not just this book, demonstrates that somewhere in Christian History, we forgot or deliberately threw out the teachings from Jewish roots. Not only is Dr. Levine a wonderful writer whether in academia or popular works, she is also a wonderful researcher with the ability to bring context to the ancient texts that I hold dear. I am on a quest to read everything she has written!

Historia
While the North prevailed in the Civil War, ending slavery and giving the country a "new birth of freedom," Heather Cox Richardson argues in this provocative work that democracy's blood-soaked victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. It was a natural fit. Settlers from the East had for decades been pushing into the West, where the seizure of Mexican lands at the end of the Mexican-American War and treatment of Native Americans cemented racial hierarchies....

I have followed Dr. Richardson for quite sometime. This is the first book I’ve read of hers and it won’t be the last. This is eye opening and places in historical context the political events of today. A must read.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Didn’t Catch My Attention
Revisado: 02-06-24
I listened to over two hours of this book and could not do more. Some books require ‘getting’ into them to want to continue, however, after listening for 10 chapters, that never happened despite the great reviews. I believe the main reason is I felt as though this author was trying to write in the style of Wendell Berry rather than his own. I may try again; for now, though, I’m done.
