Historia
In this real-life thriller packed with jaw-dropping revelations, award-winning investigative journalist Tom Burgis weaves together stories that reveal a terrifying global web of corruption. Glimpses of this shadowy world have emerged over the years. In Kleptopia, Burgis connects the dots. He follows the dirty money that is flooding the global economy, emboldening dictators, and poisoning democracies. From the Kremlin to Beijing, Harare to Riyadh, Paris to the White House, the trail shows something even more sinister: the thieves are uniting. And the human cost will be great.

Explains so much of how we got to this point
Revisado: 12-16-24
Mr. Burgis puts so much detail and background into this book that the reader/listener can get bogged down. This detail is necessary to prove the case he lays out, but it is not necessary for us to understand what is happening. So don’t get discouraged if you can’t keep names, dates and past events all too of mind. It is more important, in my opinion, to understand the methods and pervasive dealings among the kleptocrats to understand the dangerous future we face if we can’t curtail and even reverse some effects of such activities in the future

Historia
What do we owe the past? How to make peace with a dark family history? Burkhard Bilger hardly knew his grandfather growing up. His parents immigrated to Oklahoma from Germany after World War II, and though his mother was an historian, she rarely talked about her father or what he did during the war. Then one day a packet of letters arrived from Germany, yellowing with age, and a secret history began to unfold.

A book for our times and for all times
Revisado: 06-07-24
In these days of our polarized society we would be smart to read the story of a good man who joined the Nazi party but tried to stay true to his values while protecting his family and the community where he worked. We tend to see too much white and black and not enough grey to understand others.

Historia
On a moonless night in the summer of 1793 a crime was committed in the back room of a New York brothel—the kind of crime that even victims usually kept secret. Instead, seventeen-year-old seamstress Lanah Sawyer did what virtually no one in US history had done before: she charged a gentleman with rape. Her accusation sparked a raw courtroom drama and a relentless struggle for vindication that threatened both Lanah’s and her assailant’s lives.

A lot of research

Sweet did a LOT of research on social norms and case history so the story moves slowly with the detail included. If you are not into history, you may want to avoid this one. It was interesting for me

Historia
In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Details behind the scenes
Revisado: 12-18-23
It was eye opening to hear the lies and refusal to face the truth by Republican cowards who only wanted to save their Congressional seats. I am ashamed of these Representatives. I applaud Liz Cheney, Adam Kinzinger, and all the members of the January 6 committee for their commitment to the truth. I only wish Trump supporters would listen to this warning but they only read and watch the lying false media who reinforce their own beliefs
