Historia
In 1985, 32-year-old David Brown seemed to have it all. A computer genius with a million-dollar business, married for the fifth time - most recently to a 23-year-old beauty, Linda, the mother of his new-born baby - he was the living emobodiment of a rich playboy. But the signs of the dream life's dark underside were already emerging - especially in Brown's penchant for divorcing his young wives as soon as they matured to full womanhood.

Short impactful listen
Revisado: 04-28-25
Ann Rule did an amazing job narrating her own novel. This is a short but compelling story of manipulation and murder.

I miss Ramses
Revisado: 06-12-24
Another adventure with Peabody and Emerson with very little excavation and a lot of chaotic adventures. Ramses stays back in England and that made the family a little less sparkly. Emerson gets amnesia and it's an intriguing plot twist for a bit. Not a favorite compared to others in the series.

Historia
London, 1889. Veronica Speedwell and her natural historian beau Stoker are summoned by Sir Hugo Montgomerie, head of Special Branch. He has a personal request on behalf of his goddaughter, Euphemia Hathaway. After years of traveling the world, her eldest brother, Jonathan, heir to Hathaway Hall, was believed to have been killed in the catastrophic eruption of Krakatoa a few years before. But now a man matching Jonathan’s description and carrying his possessions has arrived at Hathaway Hall with no memory of his identity or where he has been.

Another fun installment of Veronica and Stoker
Revisado: 06-08-24
This is a fun series, lighthearted at most times and some laugh out loud moments. I usually listen at 1.2 to 1.5 speeds and yet the Narrator still chooses to make Stokers voice painfully slow and low, almost as if he has suffered a head injury. Not a good look for the supposed hero. The introduction of Harry, a man from Veronica's past, was a great addition as was the history behind the Krakatoa volcanic eruption. You have to suspend the reality of the times Veronica lived in to believe most of her story (she's the illegitimate granddaughter of Queen Victoria, she makes a living curating a museum and collecting butterflies but is never home, she works with Scotland Yard to solve cases). Still a fun ride.

Historia
John Rebus is on a train from Edinburgh to London, where he has been drafted for his expertise in the modus operandi of serial killers. The Wolfman could be his toughest case yet - a serial killer named by the press due to a terrifying trademark of taking a bite from each victim. Rebus' Scotland Yard opposite number, George Flight, isn't too happy at yet another interference in the investigation - especially from an upstart jock hounding him at every turn.

Crisp, fast moving police procedural. Great narration. The Wolfman's inner thoughts make for a creepy and exciting listen.

Historia
Must one sister suffer in poverty while the other lives in the lap of luxury? This question plagued Harriet Clifton incessantly. Inviting herself to her widowed sister Cordelia's posh London townhouse for the season was surely the only way to meet a suitable partner - as well as escape drafty old Pringle House forever. The vain Cordelia was meanwhile casting her net for the notorious Marquess of Arden, a man who would rather court a mistress than wed a wife.

Ear Candy
Revisado: 02-26-23
Marion Chesney audibles are a terrific way to pass a few delightful hours in another world. Several of these Regency romances do not even require an audible credit. The tales are light and predictable and I find Lindy Nettleton’s voice an upper crust delight. I have listened to several tales this winter and sometimes I find myself at work using Regency slang or speaking with the affect of the tonne.
This particular novel has a great heroine in Harriet Clinton; a church mouse poor girl of quality living in a decaying family home with her elderly auntie. She encounters the Marquess of Arden on her property one afternoon and she and Aunt Rebecca do their best to entertain him and his young cousin Bertram with no food, heat, or even tea in house. The Marquess shows them great kindness and generosity with no judgement or malice. After the visit Harriet decides it’s time to live with heat and food and company. She makes the brave decision to descend on her wealthy sister Cordelia in London. Cordelia’s a nasty, selfish piece of work who is pursuing a relationship with the Marquess of Arden. What follows is a great story with humor, romance, misunderstanding, balls, dresses, jealousy and finally true love.

Arranging a season for an unruly young lady whose habit is to enter drawing rooms by sliding down banisters presents a challenge at best - especially since the hoydenish Mira has a sister of incomparable grace and beauty. Mira isn’t at all daunted by the local society and its ridiculous marriage mart. Her heart belongs to Lord Charles, who has been the object of her dreams ever since she was a child. But alas, Charles has eyes only for her ever-perfect sister, Drusilla.

Weak spots
Revisado: 08-14-22
Started out great but my two annoyances at the end were the availability of Rohypnol in North America as well as the antiquated use of insulin in a vial with syringe administration in the year 2020. People use pumps nowadays or insulin pens.
