Historia
For a quarter-century, from the end of Watergate to the aftermath of the Cold War, no Republican won the presidency without his help or ran the White House without his advice. James Addison Baker III was the indispensable man for four presidents because he understood better than anyone how to make Washington work at a time when America was shaping events around the world. The Man Who Ran Washington is a pause-resisting portrait of a power broker who influenced America's destiny for generations.

The man created Frankenstein....
Revisado: 04-13-25
and then when he was asked about it, shrugged his shoulders and said he did so ethically. it's an interesting fascination we have with these figures, a man who had all the breaks and got to make all the decisions he wanted to make, even ones in private that he would not give the same quarter for his perceived political adversaries. this is a man who created, in large part, the soul of the modern-day republican party and then they wonder where trump came from..... he came from you. Jimmy baker, and all the underhanded deceptive and democracy killing things you did in your life.. the book is wonderful because it illustrates how magnificently nonchalant he is to his guilt and where we are today and at the same time meticulously lays out for us the path, albeit guilded one, this man took to now have profound influence in all of our lives, including the failure of helping post-communism Russia to the modern day political establishment he helped create by turning a blind eye to the Atwater-style tactics he tacitly endorsed. nice guy? proper etiquette? a gentleman? sure, all those things.... but I hope he still smokes a turd in hell for what he did to get us to the point we are now in society.

From trips on private jets and encounters with world leaders to shocking accounts of misogyny and double standards behind the scenes, this searing memoir exposes both the personal and the political fallout when unfettered power and a rotten company culture take hold. In a gripping and often absurd narrative where a few people carelessly hold the world in their hands, this eye-opening memoir reveals what really goes on among the global elite.

Lethal Carelessness - American Money Dream
Revisado: 03-18-25
What courage to expose the misogynistic and self-important libertarian incel social bafoons running this, and many, companies. not surprised that a white (married) male incel with access to power thanks to his 2000, 2004, 2016 and now 2024 connections continues to hold unchecked power, quash harassment investigations and run life like he's earned it..Thanks to the author for exposing this conservative hypocrisy. fascinating read with the inner workings exposing incel children and the enablers around them, no matter how many foundations they run preaching what they say and not what they do, if you want to understand why we are socially in the position we are in now, this book will help explain why the problem American capitalism reign supreme above any moral or social contract in the USA. Thank you for writing this book - it's only a shame that electoral outcomes recently will mean nothing will come of this exposure but at least it's out there.

Historia
Set in an addicts' halfway house and a tennis academy, and featuring the most endearingly screwed-up family to come along in recent fiction, Infinite Jest explores essential questions about what entertainment is and why it has come to so dominate our lives; about how our desire for entertainment affects our need to connect with other people; and about what the pleasures we choose say about who we are.

Good Luck...
Revisado: 02-28-25
Years ago a good friend of mine was on a beach in Mexico. a local teenage boy, likely know older than 16 or 17, approach the two of them with a basket of oysters and clams on ice and offered, for the price of $0.25 each, shucked fresh oysters. they were hungry, and so between the two of them they ate about 16. Very fresh and very delicious. my friend was there with his buddy, who had a hard copy of infinite Jest on his beach towel. As the oyster vendor picked up his basket, dripping a bit from the melting ice chunks that were keeping the remaining oysters cool and fresh, he starts to walk away from them, stops, turns and says before moving on- "Good luck with David Foster Wallace."

Historia
Artificial intelligence is smarter than humans. It can process information at lightning speed and remain focused on specific tasks without distraction. AI can see into the future, predicting outcomes and even use sensors to see around physical and virtual corners. So why does Intelligence frequently get it so wrong? The answer is us. Humans design the algorithms that define the way that AI works and the processed information reflects an imperfect world.

Revisado: 01-28-25
So. in sum : those that teach AI will shape it. if those people are evil, things will go sideways. Be nice to AI, or it will know you. If humanity doesn't improve, it's over. Doesn't look good for us collectively.

Historia
Some years ago a stash of family records was handed down to Michael Palin, among which were photos of an enigmatic young man in army uniform, as well as photos of the same young man as a teenager looking uncomfortable at family gatherings. This, Michael learned, was his Great-Uncle Harry, born in 1884, died in 1916. He had previously had no idea that he had a Great-Uncle Harry, much less that his life was cut short at the age of 32 when he was killed in the Battle of the Somme. The discovery both shocked him and made him want to know much more.

what a beautiful and well researched read, as real as real gets telling the beautiful story of someone who might otherwise just be a name on a Remembrance Wall in the Somme. Beautifully told and beautifully written

Historia
On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. Inside were thirty emaciated men, barely alive, and they had an extraordinary tale to tell. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. While the Wager had been chasing a Spanish treasure-filled galleon known as “the prize of all the oceans,” it had wrecked on a desolate island off the coast of Patagonia.

When Elon Musk was a kid in South Africa, he was regularly beaten by bullies. One day a group pushed him down some concrete steps and kicked him until his face was a swollen ball of flesh. He was in the hospital for a week. But the physical scars were minor compared to the emotional ones inflicted by his father, an engineer, rogue, and charismatic fantasist.

Revisado: 04-17-24
loved the book and the research - love him or hate him he reinvested everything he made into building himself an empire and to a certain degree, that's very respectable despite the impulsive nasty tweets. unlike other billionaires, this is the true definition of self-made with all of its flaws and successes. a great read to understand both sides of this coin.

Historia
Barbara Butcher was early in her recovery from alcoholism when she found an unexpected lifeline: a job at the Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City. The second woman ever hired for the role of Death Investigator in Manhattan, she was the first to last more than three months. The work was gritty, demanding, morbid, and sometimes dangerous—and she loved it. In What the Dead Know, she writes with the kind of New York attitude and bravado you might expect from decades in the field, investigating more than 5,500 death scenes, 680 of which were homicides.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.
