Why Daisy doesn’t read
Revisado: 04-01-24
The guests’ book explanations are entertaining, some even think they are successfully convincing Daisy to read their recommendation but Daisy isn’t going to read any of them. More, please!

Historia
Wharton's most erotic and lyrical novel, Summer explores a daring theme for 1917, a woman's awakening to her sexuality. Eighteen-year-old Charity Royall lives in the small town of North Dormer, ignorant of desire until the arrival of architect Lucius Harney. Like the succulent summer landscape in the Berkshires around them, Charity's romance is lush and picturesque, but its consequences are harsh and real.

Pacing is off
Revisado: 10-20-21
The narration has choppy pacing, sometimes very fast and sometimes too slow. I think I would have liked the story if I could follow it without constantly trying to adjust the speed. Can’t even tell if I liked the narrator.

Delightful
Revisado: 11-22-20
After her boyfriend dumps her and she is in a car accident, Lizzie Baker “wakes” as Lizzie Bennett in her favorite book, her own friends and family appearing in her dream as familiar characters in Pride & Prejudice. Absolutely delightful and entertaining.

Historia
Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

Did not want it to end
Revisado: 02-24-20
This time travel novel is an epic tale, a history lesson, and a romance. Incredibly well written and compelling, I did not want this book to end.

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

A Return to Gilead
Revisado: 12-17-19
I have wanted this sequel to exist since I first read The Handmaid's Tale in the late 1980s. Now, having devoured The Testaments, I am sated and yet still hungry. The cracks and workarounds within the Republic of Gilead are thrilling, a testament to the idea that we could survive such a society if only we can find the right people, find those cracks. I don't yet know if this book will be worthy of 20+ re-readings like its predecessor, but I'm willing to give it a try. Narrators are exceptional.

Outstanding narration
Revisado: 06-11-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I have read The Handmaid's Tale at least 5 times, therefore I already have a voice in my head that is Offred's. Claire Danes's narration does not displace that voice, but rather enhances it. Listening to her read, I would forget sometimes that I know what happens, becoming enraptured by her storytelling. I never expected to love the audiobook so much.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Handmaid's Tale?
To me the whole book is memorable because it's such a cautionary tale for women, losing one freedom after another until there is no power. During GW Bush's presidency when the CCTV cameras were going up everywhere and rights were being taken away, I was conscious of The Eye watching.
Which character – as performed by Claire Danes – was your favorite?
I love Offred, she is an old friend of mine.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book chills me to my bones, every time.
Any additional comments?
Great production, great voiceover, great author, great book.
