Historia
In this definitive biography of one of Hollywood's most beloved stars, Michael Munn reveals the truth behind the diffident, earnest and kindly persona of Jimmy Stewart. Drawn from the author's formal interviews and informal meetings with the star and his friendship with Stewart's wife, Gloria, is this portrait of a man who came from the Presbyterian traditions of Pennsylvania to become one of the silver screen's enduring legends.

Highly unprofessional narrator.
Revisado: 10-25-21
I love Jimmy Stewart and found the book very interesting. However, my biggest pet peeve with audiobooks is when the reader, who I assume does this for a living, can't be bothered to research how to pronounce names. And these are the names of actual famous people. How can you not know Bette Davis' name is pronounced Betty? Harry Cohn is pronounced Cone not Cahn. Marlene Dietrich is Marlena and on and on. If it's your job, do your homework. Very unprofessional.

The "smart and zippy account" (The Wall Street Journal) of how Las Vegas saved Elvis and Elvis saved Las Vegas in the greatest musical comeback of all time. At once "a fascinating history of Vegas as gambling capital, celebrity playground, mob hangout, [and] entertainment Valhalla” (Rolling Stone) and the incredible "tale of how the King got his groove back" (Associated Press), Elvis in Vegas is a classic feel-good story for the ages.

Awful awful impersonations by narrator. Makes Elvis sound like Yogi Bear. Accents are laughable.

Beautiful, Heartwrenching

These stories needed to be told. For those of us who only watched on television, the casualty number doesn't do justice to the individuals who died, or who were left behind. Beautifully written and narrated.

A major new biography of the Civil War general and American president, by the author of the New York Times bestseller A. Lincoln. The dramatic story of one of America's greatest and most misunderstood military leaders and presidents, this is a major new interpretation of Ulysses S. Grant. Based on seven years of research with primary documents, some of them never tapped before, this is destined to become the Grant biography of our times.

Historia
Based largely on documents declassified in only the last few years, One Man Against the World paints a devastating portrait of a tortured yet brilliant man who led the country largely according to a deep-seated insecurity and distrust of not only his cabinet and Congress but the American population at large. In riveting, tick-tock prose, Weiner illuminates how the Vietnam War and the Watergate controversy that brought about Nixon's demise were inextricably linked.

Brought down by narrator
Revisado: 05-16-17
Appalling and unnecessary imitations of Nixon and Kissinger.
Biggest pet peeve though, when reading about real, historical people it takes very little effort to learn correct pronunciation of their names: SIGH-mington not SIMington. Strah-kin not Stray-chen., etc.

Awful. Truly terrible.

Seems like the author did very little original research. Needless imagined melodrama. Seemed like a cut and paste of other, more important works.

Historia
Traditionally, Robert F. Kennedy has been viewed as either the "Good Bobby", who saw wrong and tried to right it, or the "Bad Bobby" of countless conspiracy theories. Evan Thomas' achievement is to realize RFK as a human being, to bring to life an extraordinarily complex man who was at once kind and cruel, devious and honest, fearful and brave. The portrait that emerges is unvarnished but sympathetic, packed with new details about Kennedy's early life and his behind-the-scenes machinations.

Great book, ruined.
Revisado: 08-22-15
Like others here, I would have really enjoyed this book if it had been read by almost anyone else. The narrator's constant use of (really bad) impressions was jarring. He doesn't do any of them particularly well, so one wonders why he was allowed to do them at all. Voices are fine in fiction, but completely unnecessary in a biography.
