Fast paced, unpredictable & fascinating

Already interested in John Burdett's work, I purchased this story on the recommendation of a friend. Absolutely spellbinding. It combines Buddhism, morality play, crime story, detective novel in remarkable package tied up with a bow by excellent narration. Having just finished this, I am casting about for the next read....

Contrary to rave reviews

This book is entertaining in a typical American fashion. It's stereotypical characters are well fleshed out but very predictable - as is the plot. Maybe it's just me but this is not a surprising or terribly interesting plot. And the narration by Scott Brick (a narrator I have enjoyed in the past) is actually grating on one after a while. There is unnecessary dramatic emphasis in a VERY long book. I know I listen to a huge number of audible books - literally hours in a day as I work. Maybe this much listening is getting to me - maybe not.

Exceptionally odd book

3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-22-10

I think I will "google" the author for more information. Written by a Japanese individual who is most obviously Christian...or is he/she? Is this a satirical novel? I purchased the audio book as I am interested in the Samurai culture. However, the book has only a nominal connection to the Samurai culture and in a disheartening fashion, you come to understand very little about Samurai and a lot about the torment of faith. Lots of scriptural quotes at the end..very odd, indeed.

Strange narration

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 12-28-09

I have always enjoyed Scott Brick as a Narrator.

The narration has odd pauses, strange (and inaccurate) foreign inflections and inappropriate emphasis throughout the book. I will continue to listen as the plot and the writing itself is interesting. But the odd narration allows only short periods of listening enjoyment.

Surprisingly intelligent

Do not let the first chapter of the book (a fairy tale) deter you from listening to all of it. It is a hands on way of implementing change in one's life. Even if you do not believe anything about The Secret or the relentless "Get Rich Quick" purveyors - listen to this book and learn.

Survival in the deepest sense of the word

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 06-25-09

I highly recommend this listen. First, because the narrator is Stefan Rudnicki. His reading style is both easy to listen to and compelling. The principles of survival are applicable to everyone's life. They are precise in their instruction, clear in their application and provide compelling examples of the principles in action repeatedly. I believe everyone I know should hear this book and heed the advice given.

Don't give up if you don't like the sensational "Outside" style - it's the substance of the book that is essential listening.

Valid premise, repulsive wording

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 03-05-09

Wow. Simply amazing that a book with this much vulgarity and profanity becomes a best seller. The stream of ignorant words in place of clear language simply undermines the basic premise of the book. Impossible to finish if you cannot ignore the profanity. Maybe eating as recommended compromises your brain...

Bodice Ripper

Total

Revisado: 02-19-09

Rare unsatisfactory review This book turned out to be a bodice ripper. The narrator has an odd English accent which is inconsistent throughout the book. The characters speak in these declaratory sentences. Very odd and generally unsatisfactory book.

Concise instructions

Of all the "organization tools" available, this is the clearest and most committed to getting you organized. I did end up buying the book as the ideas are also expressed in "maps" that make a point very simple to understand. The author has spent a considerable amount of time and energy working through these concepts. No false steps here.
