Historia
Peter Robinson is the critically acclaimed New York Times and London Sunday Times best-selling author of the Inspector Alan Banks series, as well as a winner of the 2001 Anthony and 2001 Ellis Awards. Close to Home traverses the difficult landscapes of a painful past, and an uncertain future for Inspector Banks. Two 15-year-old boys are lost, and the circumstances of their disappearances seem oddly parallel save one detail. The first boy disappeared and was presumed dead 35 years ago.

Poor narrator
Revisado: 04-16-21
DCI Banks is my favorite detective series and I am up to #13 in the series. I am now put off by the narrator, Ron Keith. The quality of his voice and his inflections make every character sound middle age to old. You can not differentiate whether the character is old or young, yet you know from the story, they are quite young. As you listen, you are forced, by his voice to picture Banks as an over-weight, man in his 60's or 70's.
Although I love the Banks series, I sadly can not purchase any that are narrated by Ron Keith.

boring
Revisado: 06-14-17
What would have made Perfect Stranger better?
Endless, unnecessary details--made a boring, drawn out story line.
Narrator was weak.
Has Perfect Stranger turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Would you be willing to try another one of Rebekkah Ross’s performances?
No, not at all. Her voice is that of someone very young, and her inflections were distracting.
What character would you cut from Perfect Stranger?
Assistant pruincipal.
Any additional comments?
This does not deserve a 4 star rating.

Historia
At a university in Reykjavík, the body of a young German student is discovered, his eyes cut out and strange symbols carved into his chest. Police waste no time in making an arrest, but the victim's family isn't convinced that the right man is in custody. They ask Thóra Gudmundsdóttir, an attorney and single mother of two, to investigate. It isn't long before Thóra and her associate, Matthew Reich, uncover the deceased student's obsession with Iceland's grisly history of torture, execution, and witch hunts.

Thought it would be better.........
Revisado: 08-24-16
Would you try another book from Yrsa Sigurdardottir and/or Elizabeth Wiley?
What disappointed me in this book--and I am a huge fan of Scandinavian and Icelandic novels, was that first of all, the story line lacked any strength to get you involved right away. Secondly the pace of the plot became tedious, a flat line with nothing being revealed that would hold one's attention or anticipation.
Would you ever listen to anything by Yrsa Sigurdardottir again?
I strongly doubt unless the author tightens up her plot line and makes it much more interesting, less plodding, and a bit more surprising.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The other reason I did not like this audio was the narrator. Her inflections were very distracting. Ms Wiley would elevate her voice in the middle of a sentence, giving the impression of a lack of seriousness to the thought of the sentence.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No

Ruined by the narrator
Revisado: 10-03-12
Would you try another book from Greg Iles and/or Dick Hill?
Greg Iles is one of my favorite authors. I recently purchased "The Devil's Punchbowl".I could not get too far into it due to the narrator, Dick Hill. I deleted the book after purchasing it because of Dick Hill. His accent (real or faked) was not easy to follow, his slow pace of speaking was annoying, and he drops his voice at inprotant words and makes it hard to understand. Before i purchase another book, I will check that Dick Hill is NOT the narrator.
What other book might you compare The Devil's Punchbowl to and why?
Any book narratated by Dick Hill.
Would you be willing to try another one of Dick Hill’s performances?
No, never.
What character would you cut from The Devil's Punchbowl?
Didn't get that much into it because of Dick HIll's narration.
Any additional comments?
Please don't let Dick Hill narrate any more good books!!!

I have read all of JD, this one was the worst. Story was far from suspenseful, incredibly dragged out and not in the style of JD.

The narration makes this come alive.
Revisado: 10-25-11
Although Kate Atkinson's novels can go on and on a bit, the narration of this one made the story very enjoyable. The lovely English accent of Susan Jameson gives this story life! The characters are like so many people you know and her skill as a narrator brings out all the subtle humor within the story. The story begins with 5 separate case studies, so different and unconnected that one wonders how they will ever be brought together. They are finally entwined together with many little surprises.
