Historia
As one of the few black students in his philosophy program at Columbia University years ago, Coleman Hughes wondered why his peers seemed more pessimistic about the state of American race relations than his own grandparents–who lived through segregation. The End of Race Politics is the culmination of his years-long search for an answer.

Historia
Miah Gray is a 27-year-old former army soldier living in rural New Hampshire with his sister, mother, and her boyfriend. He is plagued by PTSD, finding solace, but not redemption, with the aid of prescribed cannabis. All he wants to do is get high, relax with a good sandwich, and watch a meteor shower with his neighborhood crush, Jen. When the sun's light is blotted out the following morning and the world is plunged into darkness, Miah finds himself locked down with his family, covering windows with trash bags, lighting candles, and following the arcane rules of an ancient prophecy.

Drivel
Revisado: 08-31-21
I will never understand authors who create characters that joke and laugh minutes after horrific events occur to them. Mr. Robinson's attempts at humor against an apocryphal backdrop is one big non sequitur. This might work as a Marvel comic book but not as a novel. Page after page I kept asking myself, "really?". Dumb book. Spend your Audible credits elsewhere.

Historia
In a future so real and near it might be now, something happens when women go to sleep: They become shrouded in a cocoon-like gauze. If they are awakened, if the gauze wrapping their bodies is disturbed or violated, the women become feral and spectacularly violent; and while they sleep they go to another place.... The men of our world are abandoned, left to their increasingly primal devices. One woman, however, the mysterious Evie, is immune to the blessing or curse of the sleeping disease.

King Collaboration: Fail
Revisado: 10-20-17
Having read every Stephen King novel, I would rate this at the bottom end of the list. The cast of characters consisted mostly of hillbilly rednecks (I pitied the narrator who had to come up with a new hick twang for every new character) that were not fully developed or evocative of any emotion - empathy or antipathy - either way. The plot bounced around from one non-descript character to another with no real impending evil or ominous threat that characterizes Stephen King's classic novels. If this novel was the torch passing from Stephen to Owen King, it was more like the passing of a candle.

The village of Saint-Ferdinand has all the trappings of a quiet life. Though if an out-of-towner stopped in, they would notice one unusual thing - a cemetery far too large and much too full for such a small town, lined with the victims of the Saint-Ferdinand Killer, who has eluded police for nearly two decades. It's not until after Inspector Stephen Crowley finally catches the killer that the town discovers even darker forces are at play.

Revisado: 08-17-17
The positive reviews of this book completely misled me. I suffered through the first couple hours and could not force myself to finish it. The story was dumb, the writing was stilted and the narration was sub-par. Whenever an author uses phrases like "she used the forest foliage to conceal her presence" rather than "she hid behind a tree", I know the author is trying too hard. This Stephen King wannabe needs to go back for a few writing seminars.

Originally conceived as a joint presentation between influential thinker and best-selling author Richard Dawkins and former evangelical preacher Dan Barker, this unique book provides an investigation into what may be the most unpleasant character in all fiction. Barker combs through both the Old and New Testaments (as well as 13 different editions of the "Good Book"), presenting powerful evidence for why Scripture shouldn't govern our everyday lives.

Bible companion
Revisado: 03-29-17
Beware: most of this book is quoting scripture with some ancillary commentary on the nature of the scriptures being quoted. That said, it was illuminating to see just how much the bible is a hostile witness for God. This would be a good reference book to have around when Christian (or Jewish) friends start making uppity declarations of God's will.

Historia
It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Historia
It's 1998, and for years the old First Bank of Cleveland has sat abandoned, perfectly preserved, its secrets only speculated on by the outside world. Twenty years before, amid strange staff disappearances and allegations of fraud, panicked investors sold Cleveland's largest bank in the middle of the night, locking out customers and employees and thwarting a looming federal investigation. In the confusion that followed, the keys to the vault's safe-deposit boxes were lost.

Disappointing
Revisado: 11-11-16
Would you try another book from D. M. Pulley and/or Emily Sutton-Smith?
No
What could D. M. Pulley have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
The main characters (both women) were portrayed as namby, pamby sissys who were on the verge of tears almost every scene or completely oblivious to obvious situations (the dumb blonde character). The story dragged on, alternating between two time periods, and neither narrative sparked any interest in the characters or what they were doing.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator's attempt at male voices was severely inadequate.
What character would you cut from The Dead Key?
Anyone named Iris in 1998 or Beatrice in 1978 - who names their kid that??

Narrator is awful
Revisado: 04-17-15
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Different narrator.
Has Losing Faith turned you off from other books in this genre?
No.
How could the performance have been better?
Every sentence began with a sharp intake of breath - very annoying. The characters were played with cartoonish voices and the narrative was read with the affectation that you might use when reading to a toddler. The narrator seemed like a high school thespian trying to impress his drama teacher.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The story was mediocre - certainly not worthy of the laudatory comments about the author's writing skills that I read in other reviews. I would not purchase another book from this author.

A book that can't decide what to be
Revisado: 03-13-15
What disappointed you about The Good House?
This book needed a good editor. The story dragged on with unnecessary descriptions and plot diversions. I kept thinking that if I had the hard copy I would tear out every other page and not lose any of the story.
What was most disappointing about Tananarive Due’s story?
The writing was semi-racist in that it played on stereotypes of blacks. The black slang, even from supposedly educated and urbane people, was annoying and painted all blacks with urban, hip hop kind of attitude. Another review said this book was a cross between a romance novel, a Lifetime Channel movie, and a very tame horror story. I would agree. It failed on all accounts.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Robin Miles?
Yes, the narrator did the best with what she had to work with.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
If you are a teen-age black girl you might like this book.

UNcomfortable from start to finish
Revisado: 03-06-14
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Can't recommend this one for anyone. Some books you can't seem to put down - this one I had a hard time picking up. I won't say it was a complete waste of my time because there is a modicum of entertainment value that comes from critiquing poorly written books but I wanted it to be a good book that kept me interested. It wasn't that book.
Would you ever listen to anything by Dan Simmons again?
No. Typecast characters (i.e.good ol' boy Southern sheriff, death camp survivor Polish Jew) were one dimensional and predictable. Plot kept going on and on when I wished it would just end (I'm a stickler for finishing a book regardless of how bad it is).
What didn’t you like about Mel Foster and Laural Merlington ’s performance?
Listening to approx. 20 hours of a character with Foghorn Leghorn's voice, together with a character sounding like an elderly Scarlett O'Hara, gave me more nightmares than the supposedly sinister storyline.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Incredulity. Couldn't believe anything about the plot, the characters, the dialogue or performance of the narrators.
