Historia
Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Well Written Fiction with Fun Paranormal Themes
Revisado: 03-05-21
I listened to this after watching Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" and its sequel "Doctor Sleep." I can say I enjoy both! It's fun to compare and contrast the two. King's writing is engaging and will bring you excitement till the end.

I loved this! This book will apply to your entire life teaching you how to understand the reason behind your emotions and how to interact with others. This book has greatly expanded my definition of empathy and I've been been practicing Karla McLauren's techniques with great results. Highly recommended for anyone.

Anecdotes to Mull Over
Revisado: 05-20-19
This isn't a step by step book, but is instead snippets of wisdom Oprah has encountered through the years. This won't be helpful for someone looking for a clear cut process for finding their purpose, but is useful for people who like to test bits of wisdom against their thoughts and lives. I really enjoyed it and I hope you do, too.

Enthralling Hard Sci Fi Set in Modern Day
Revisado: 01-16-19
I listened to these after watching the Annihilation movie, and while the books and movie differ quite a bit, it wasn't in a bad way. The three books are told from different viewpoints, and I'm impressed at how well Vandermeer switches between author voices changing language, cadence, and vocabulary to make very unique characters. Vandermeer also tells stories and descriptions that can only work in written form very well. I loved all three, but I think "Authority" may be my favorite. The narrators make wonderful performances that bring the story to life. Like the movie, these books are rather straightforward about their use of theme and symbolism, and analyzing them has been fun.
My take on the theme: Not sure if anyone else feels this way, but I think the theme running through all three books is extreme presence and the serenity found within being there. Enjoy these books and keep a look out for themes that stand out to you!

Great, Usable Information
Revisado: 09-19-18
This book is considerably information dense with tips on how to spot deception. It forgoes the old tricks you've heard like if someone crosses their arms or looks in the wrong direction for a much more solid strategy of picking up deceptive traits based on larger chunks of interaction. You'll walk away with tips you can use immediately in everyday life from finding the right babysitter, to interviewing a potential hire, to speaking to your kids. You'll want to keep this book handy to go over the information until you've got it practiced.

Good Content Stretched Out
Revisado: 12-01-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes, but only to read the first few chapters then I would suggest they skim the rest.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I didn't care of the narrator's intonation and general persona. It felt too stiff and pompous, and not relatable.
Any additional comments?
This book has good, actionable content but also seems to have a lot of filler. It's probably better to pick up the physical copy so you can easy flip past stuff that is less relevant.

Excellent and Inspiring
Revisado: 08-18-17
Would you listen to The Art of Learning again? Why?
I absolutely will listen to this again because it is packed with great information. I normally take notes when I listen to an audiobook, but I enjoyed this one so much I didn't want to have to pause and ruin my flow. I'll be re-listening soon!
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Art of Learning?
For me, Josh's comparisons to the martial arts really struck home as I used to be deep into martial arts as well and so the lessons he expressed really rang true.
What does Josh Waitzkin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I enjoyed hearing him narrate the book as I felt I got the nuance of pace and the emotion intended in his writing.
