Boring and grating
Revisado: 03-19-23
The narrator’s choices are too extreme, and the main characters on uninteresting. The plot is wandering.

Historia
Marcus Reese, Duke of Exeter, has spent most of his life pulling his twin brother out of trouble. A thank you would suffice; instead, his resentful sibling forges his name to a marriage license and presents him with an unwanted wife. She's a vicar's widow with a mind of her own, and the first person in Marcus's well-ordered life to make him feel...completely out of control. Dire straits have led Hannah to the altar with a gentleman she hardly knows. Played for a fool, she's embarrassed, furious, and worse, married to an equally outraged, exasperating man.

The narrator is unbearable
Revisado: 11-22-22
She has a weird cadence to her reading that I can't deal with. It's almost mechanical in the beat. Every sentence, except when she's reading dialogue.

Revisado: 10-20-22
He's my new favorite author! If you hadn't yet discovered him, you are in for some good writing! He's an excellent writer, has some great characters, and some laugh out loud moments. I like that his main character is brilliant, thoughtful and feels things deeply. He has a lot of kindness, but is not a pushover.
I can't really describe his writing, but maybe if you combined Carl Haissan with Walter Mosley and James Lee Burke.

Great writer, but LONG AND TEDIOUS!
Revisado: 09-14-22
Galbraith (aka JKR) is a great writer! and I usually love their books, BUT this is LONG AND TEDIOUS! It's hard to hate, because the writing is so expert, but at 32+ hours it is a slog! A lot of message boards, and I quit caring. I'm shocked at all the good reviews! I'm wondering if it's because they're such a good writer. If you like to read a lot of @ ... then this is for you. Message boards in audible format just don't do it for me, though I doubt I would find them interesting in the written format either.
I do feel a bit sorry for the narrator, who is excellent. Can you imagine having to read 32 hours of name @, over and over and over and over again.

I'm a little pissed off...
Revisado: 04-06-22
Okay, so I just discovered Sam Capra, which meant that I got to binge listen.... and I did. I listened to the whole series in one good binge... and then the next title is not out! So I am a little pissed...
By why do I give this series such a good review: First the narrator, I always know who is talking. The narrator has chosen voices and accents for each character, and I am never wondering who is talking. That is not an easy task.
I like all the characters. They are all flawed, and I never quite know what is really going on behind the scenes, so there is a limited viewpoint, which I like.
I like the set up for the main character. It's just a fun, easy, and interesting listen.
But start at the beginning of the series.

This is long, and the writing is fantastic!
Revisado: 09-13-21
Winslow is a fantastic writer! I wasn't particularly interested in the subject matter, but because the writing was so good, I enjoyed it all! The narration is also great. I didn't notice it at all, which is a mark of great narrator.
I'm a bit squeamish about parts of it, but, I still listened to entire book, without fast forwarding.

This book was a slog.
Revisado: 08-18-21
The writing is good, but the plot is incredibly boring. None of the characters stood out to me. I guess well-developed characters matter more to me than good writing. The plot doesn't make sense and takes place mostly in one room. It was weirdly claustrophobic. None of the sentences were clunky, and there were not a lot of cliches, but it was just too boring. I can't bother to finish it.

Boring, redundant and graphically violent
Revisado: 08-05-21
Karin Slaughter is an excellent writer. Unfortunately, this book is not one of her better ones. There are way too many scenes of teenage girls being tortured. I found myself fast- forwarding through much of the book. I did read it to the end, and I think that is a tribute to Slaughter's excellent writing, but much of it was painful, and weirdly boring at the same time. I'm actually not sure what the purpose of all the graphic scenes of torture were. There was also a lack of understanding about how the people respond to torture and/or trauma. So if you have to read all of Slaughter's writing, be forwarded, but if you are just looking for a good book, look at her other work first. "False Witness" is excellent, as is the Trent series.
