Historia
For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven. He watches over his territory from atop a tower in the powerful port of Vastai. His will is enacted through the Raven's Lease, a human ruler chosen by the god himself. His magic is sustained via the blood sacrifice that every Lease must offer. And under the Raven's watch, the city flourishes. But the power of the Raven is weakening. A usurper has claimed the throne. The kingdom borders are tested by invaders who long for the prosperity that Vastai boasts.

Sexist writing
Revisado: 08-22-18
I've finally found a book I hate more than Eragon. This story condescends in its description of female characters. I've been reading this genre for 30+ years, so I can power through a significant amount of sexism in my speculative fiction, but thought chapter 1 I felt like I was being insulted and by chapter 3 I felt physically nauseous listening to the way women were being described.

Historia
Gunslinging, chain-smoking, and Stetson-wearing Taoist psychopomp Elouise "Lou" Merriwether might not be a normal 19-year-old, but she's too busy keeping San Francisco safe from ghosts, shades, and geung si to care much about that. It's an important job, though most folks consider it downright spooky. Some have even accused Lou of being more comfortable with the dead than the living, and, well...they're not wrong.

Really enjoyable
Revisado: 08-22-15
What about Emily Woo Zeller’s performance did you like?
Ms. Zeller swears very effectively and I particularly liked how her voice changed after a certain character's injury.
Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful new heroine and I quite enjoyed the world, as well. I'm looking forward to a sequel--or anything else Ms. Tanzer writes next.
