A fantastic journey through history.
Revisado: 03-30-14
What made the experience of listening to The Fall and Rise of China the most enjoyable?
The narrator is the author, he speaks directly and his passion for Chinese history is glaringly obvious. The author goes into such detail and uses language so well that you have no difficulty imagining the scenes and events he describes.
This is multiplied by just how interesting Chinese history is and how well this time period is recorded.
What did you like best about this story?
I found the time period of the late 1800's to early 1900's to be very interesting, the dowager empress was such a b***. It was cool to see China has conservative obstructions on both sides of the spectrum just as the west does.
Then the dramatic transformation with the ending of the empire and the birth of the republic and following civil wars gave birth to a modern entity that is not entirely different to those in the west.
What about Professor Richard Baum’s performance did you like?
10/10 enough said.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Definitely some laughs, I felt sorry for many characters, the Lao Beijing most of all during the cultural revolution. The most important thing that this book made me feel is a unity or commonality to a people who used to seem alien to me.
As someone who has never visited China, I now see that they are just like us at the core.
Any additional comments?
Stalin was a bastard, even to Mao.

Revisado: 10-31-13
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It was such a well written story and so well performed by Roy Ditrice, he returned to his A game after some of the middle books.
I really didn't want this book to end.
What did you like best about this story?
The plot twists and surprises, the characters and language used to illustrate the world were all just amazing.
Have you listened to any of Roy Dotrice’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
This one was probably his best, I could not fault it.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I don't want to spoil it but I will hint to the surprise at the wall near the end left me stunned.
Any additional comments?
George R.R Martin, you are amazing. Roy Dotrice is also amazing, this series has just been the best fiction I have ever read (listened to).

Historia
In this delightful, acclaimed bestseller, one of the world’s leading cognitive scientists tackles the workings of the human mind. What makes us rational—and why are we so often irrational? How do we see in three dimensions? What makes us happy, afraid, angry, disgusted, or sexually aroused? Why do we fall in love? And how do we grapple with the imponderables of morality, religion, and consciousness?
