Solid book; good performances
Revisado: 08-06-19
Overall I liked this book and thought it was well-read. I liked the mythical nature of the story and the prose was beautifully written. However, the characters did not capture my attention in the same way as Ines of My Soul, another book of Ms. Allende's, which I read in hard copy and could not put down.

Couldn't stop listening, but a few quibbles
Revisado: 03-03-19
I listened to this after listening to The Good Daughter by the author. I really enjoyed it and was held captive by the story. I really wanted to know what happened next. However, the book offered less mystery (at least in the last half or so) than The Good Daughter, so I personally enjoyed it a bit less.
I also don't know that I'll be able to listen to more books by this author if they all have the same similarities. She clearly doesn't like the police, who were bad guys in both stories. I found it particularly uncovincing in this story that so many law enforcement officers would be involved in such bad things. I also don't know why you'd have two separate characters in two separate books named "Huckabee" with the nickname "Huckleberry." It is so specific, and it took me out of Claire and Lydia's world and reminded me that this was fiction, because I kept thinking of The Good Daughter.
So it's a good read, but I would recommend The Good Daughter over Pretty Girls.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.

This book touched my soul
Revisado: 01-03-19
I am studying environmental management and j found this book stirring and moving. The lengthy setup of the characters almost felt like a collection of intriguing and moving short stories, with the author showing all the characters' connections to trees and forests. Eventually, all of these stories wove together, with some connections clear and others a bit more ambiguous. I did not agree with all the characters' actions, but the author helped me understand their motivations. I am still not clear on everything that happened, but that is intentional, and it made me think. Unfortunately I did not love the narration, especially for my favorite character, a botanist who is part deaf. the accent was distracting and sounded similar to the Chinese accent. I thought the accent work was fairly poor and in general the narrator's style is not my favorite. For other whom I thought would love this book I have recommended reading it rather than listening.

Great performances; heartfelt play
Revisado: 11-25-18
I really enjoyed this audible original. My family and I listened to it on a car ride; it was perfect since we don't travel together enough to get through a long book. The star-studded cast was fantastic and I enjoyed hearing all the familiar voices. The creative team and Audible did a great job of translating the play to audio format so I felt like I could see it in my mind's eye. I wonder if there's actually a narrator in the play. I doubt it, but they made it so it wasn't just boring reading of stage directions--the narration was quite funny! I am loving the new membership perk of getting to free audible originals each month and this was a great choice!

Historia
When they met at an airport, it was love at first sight. But in time, everything collapsed. As an unnamed but unforgettable woman muses on her life—from meet cute to marriage and parenthood—her recollections inexorably build to a devastating truth. In this shattering performance, Carey Mulligan, star of the critically lauded drama An Education, captivates audiences with playwright Dennis Kelly’s harrowing ruminations on family, ambition, gender, and violence.

Gut wrenching
Revisado: 10-04-18
This was the first free audible original I listened to through the new program where members get 2 free each month. It was really great. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about a play in this format but in the monologue format it works. Carey Mulligan is brilliant and I wish I could've seen get in the play but while it was not quite the same listening without seeing I still enjoyed it. It is extremely sad and the author did a great job of setting you up for that painful moment when you find out what happened. I enjoyed listening to his commentary afterward as well. Would definitely recommend!

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared....

Moving, inspirational, and emotional
Revisado: 10-03-18
This book was a roller coaster of emotions. Beautifully written, it captured this amazing story wonderfully. It had my attention and my heart the whole way through. I loved that the author did not just focus on Louis but gave credit and attention to the other brave men who shared the journey with him, especially Phil. I would like to more from his perspective after they parted; I wonder if there is more in the records.

Forget the Kama Sutra. When it comes to inventive sex acts, just look to the sea. There we find the elaborate mating rituals of armored lobsters; giant right whales engaging in a lively threesome while holding their breath; full-moon sex parties of groupers; and daily mating blitzes by blueheaded wrasse. Deep-sea squid perform inverted 69s while hermaphrodite sea slugs link up in giant sex loops.

Interesting Book; ok narration
Revisado: 09-13-18
As someone working toward a career in marine conservation, I found the subject matter of this book fascinating. I liked the use of vignettes and the engaging narrative to discuss some of the most challenging issues facing our oceans. It was also nice that the author took a optimistic View. The narration was okay, but there were a number of mispronunciations which bothered me significantly. For example the author mispronounced anemone (as aneNoMe) about half the time and also is pronounced conch, Maldives, and a few other words. I would have hoped that audible would hire someone who knows about the subject matter to edit the audio book and ensure correct pronunciation. So that diminished the experience a bit for me.

I Couldn't Stop Listening
Revisado: 08-31-18
This was truly one of my favorite books of this genre. I absolutely loved it so much I felt a bit sad when it was over. I cried and laughed and had every emotion in between. The story is suspenseful, and I could not stop listening. I didn't guess the twist at all--not even a sense of it--which is uncommon for me with these books. Maybe because (without giving anything away) the coincidence was just a little too farfetched, but I didn't mind that at all. I identified with many of the characters, and felt drawn into their story. The narrator was good--not so great that I'd seek out books narrated by her--but definitely good. Not for the faint at heart, but I highly recommend!

Historia
Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly.

Good book
Revisado: 08-10-18
I really enjoyed this book. The narration was great and it had me entertained the whole way through. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is I did predict the ending. I didn't figure out the EXACT way it played out but I knew what turned out to be the main outline of what happened maybe halfway through.

For almost a decade, Rachel Caine has turned her back on home, kept distant by family disputes and her work monitoring wolves on an Idaho reservation. But now, summoned by the eccentric Earl of Annerdale and his controversial scheme to reintroduce the grey wolf to the English countryside, she is back in the peat and wet light of the Lake District. The earl's project harks back to an ancient idyll of untamed British wilderness.

Great Narrator
Revisado: 02-25-18
I became interested in this book because of the narrator who also narrated parts of the girl on the train. I am also interested in Zoology so I was intrigued by the subject matter. The narration is wonderful. The prose of the book is beautifully written. I enjoyed the story, but it was a bit slow at times. Not my favorite book I have ever listened to but definitely enjoyable.
