Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Everyone should read this!
Revisado: 10-21-23
I’ve heard a lot about better “sleep hygiene” over the last several years, and, at times, have made half-hearted attempts to improve. However, I never stuck to most of the tips long enough to make them into habits. This book has taught me the real WHY behind most of the sleep hygiene tips (and has revealed that a lot of life’s aches, pains, and frustrations are heavily influenced by poor sleep) and I’m now motivated to make lasting changes!

I have listened to audiobooks of all types for years, but this is the first one that brought me to tears. The performance brought the story to life in a visceral way.

I really enjoyed this story! Most of us can relate to the combination of love and messy dysfunction that make up our families. The performance enriched this story like few other audio performances have! I definitely want to download more books narrated by Karina Fernandez.

Historia
Mother of Pearl is populated by wonderfully rich and original characters. The paths of Even Grade, a black man who grew up an orphan, and Valuable Komer, a white girl who is the daughter of the town whore, cross through Joody Two Sun, a seer, who becomes Even's lover. Both Even and Valuable are seeking the family, love, and commitment they never had, and their search ultimately takes both of them to places they never dreamed they'd go.

One of my all-time favorites 💜
Revisado: 10-19-19
I have read this book so many times, but listening to it so artfully performed made it come to life in a whole new way for me. My one and only complaint about this audiobook is that it is choppy between chapters and it seems as if sections might even have been skipped.

Historia
Twenty-eight-year-old Even Grade is a Black man who was orphaned as a child. 15-year-old Valuable Korner is a White girl who might as well have been orphaned. Petal, Mississippi, circa 1956, seems an unlikely spot for these two to connect, but a friendship forged across race lines is just one of many miracles waiting to happen in this small Southern town.

Best suited for young teenagers.

If I were 13 years old - instead of 39 years old - I probably would have enjoyed this much more. Should definitely be targeted to young teens and not adults.
