Historia
Wait Till Next Yearis the story of a young girl growing up in the suburbs of New York in the 1950s, when owning a single-family home on a tree-lined street meant the realization of dreams, when everyone knew everyone else on the block, and the children gathered in the streets to play from sunup to sundown. The neighborhood was equally divided among Dodger, Giant, and Yankee fans, and the corner stores were the scenes of fierce and affectionate rivalries.

More than Baseball
Revisado: 06-16-24
I enjoyed the descriptions of growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950’s and the feeling of changes that overcome us involuntarily. Bittersweet, thought-provoking. Were the 1950s really like that? I hope so. The relationships between the young author and her community were heartwarming. The diversity of the surroundings and her growing realizations as times changed, and the wonderful influence of her teachers who helped guide her head and heart toward thinking for herself, were memorable. While she is about a decade older than I, and her locale was on the opposite side of the country where I grew up, I found myself reflecting upon my own childhood in the Pacific Northwest during the years she cites: 1954, 56, 57, 58, etc. She was the age of my teenage baby-sitters, who so impressed me. I wonder, are children of this 3rd decade of this millennium forming memories that will guide them, and that they will remember and write memoirs about in the coming decades? I suppose the answer must be, yes. And I hope to be around long enough to read those memoirs.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
Yogananda was born in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India, to a devout family. According to his younger brother, Sananda, from his earliest years young Mukunda's awareness and experience of the spiritual was far beyond the ordinary. In his youth he sought out many of India's Hindu sages and saints, hoping to find an illuminated teacher to guide him in his spiritual quest. In 1910 Yogananda's seeking after various saints mostly ended when, at the age of 17, he met his guru, Swami Yukteswar Giri. He describes his first meeting with Yukteswar as a rekindling of a relationship that had lasted for many lifetimes.

Not the autobiography
Revisado: 04-15-23
This story wasn’t the book I thought I ordered. I thought it was odd because a friend had highly recommended it and it wasn’t very interesting. It was a mere recounting of places and people. Not very interesting to me. Maybe this book would be more interesting to someone who is already a follower and know more about him. I want to read the autobiography.

Historia
A true musical polymath, Beck shifts between and blends genres and generations with a preternatural ease—one foot in the secret history of American music and the other moving toward the future. Consistently brushed off by industry gatekeepers on both coasts, Beck perseveres—ultimately building a bespoke audience of millions who share his borderless musical vision. In Dear Life, Beck proves that the most powerful art is made by those who are brave enough to be fully themselves.

Beck’s Story
Revisado: 04-15-23
I found Beck’s life story to be inspiring. How he spent his young teen years among other like-minded creatives made me think of my own teen years in the creative corners of Portland, Oregon, in the late 1960s. Charmed times that do not sustain themselves. So much talent that does not achieve fame. Then the synchronicity between his parents and their connections - that was interesting. Taken by his family as unremarkable, but rare it is.
The way he discovered and integrated the old-timey music of the South interested me personally, because of my father’s Arkansas upbringing and the music he brought to me. It was part of my everyday life, and I took it for granted. That Beck had to find it and bring it into his own creative process was a delight to hear - he loved it that much, even though it wasn’t a part of his own personal heritage.
It had not occurred to me that Ozark or Appalachian or Delta Blues types of music were not popular during the 1980s and 1990s. Folk music has always been a part of my life, and since Covid there have sprouted song circles and music festivals on Zoom where people from around the world join and sing and play. This is more about participation than about performance. Called “folk music” we define it as music of the folk, anything that folks like to sing, and all genres are welcome. I have recommended Beck’s audio memoir to my music-loving friends.
I like that Beck went ahead following his own path. Popular trends should not influence an artist. But I suppose it’s hard not to worry about that if one is trying to make a living. I think that once an artist lets the goal of money influence their direction, it can have a detrimental effect on the soul of their creative projects.
I had never heard of Beck before this. I guess I was busy raising my young daughter during those years. I will go look for his music now!
Thank you Beck, for sharing your story!

Outstanding Narration

I think this narration is the best I’ve heard of almost any book I’ve listened to on Audible. The story, the writing, all of it was mesmerizing. It will be my choice for my book group next year.

General Alex Dumas is a man almost unknown today, yet his story is strikingly familiar—because his son, the novelist Alexandre Dumas, used his larger-than-life feats as inspiration for such classics as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

New Look at The French Revolution
Revisado: 12-09-21
Fascinating history about race and politics, power and injustice. I had just finished “The Count of Monte Cristo” and a friend recommended this book. I highly recommend this book, and especially this audio edition. The reader tells the tale with sensitivity and his vocal expression pulls the listener in. Very well-done. It’s way past time to erect a statue to the great soldier and courageous man, Alexandre Dumas. This history should be included in textbooks and history classes.

Excellent Narration
Revisado: 11-28-21
The reader was perfect for this story. Sometimes the readers detract from the story, which is always a disappointment. Saskia Maarleveld’s voice took me right into the story and was never a distraction. The British accent enhances the scene without being overdone.
