Historia
The only question which hangs over the life of Sir Richard Wyndham, notable whip, dandy and Corinthian, is one of marriage. On the eve of making the most momentous decision of his life, he is on his way home, a little worse for drink, when he chances upon a beautiful young fugitive climbing out of a window by means of knotted sheets - and so finds a perfect opportunity for his own escape.

Not one of Georgette Heyer’s best.
Revisado: 02-26-25
Not a great story and made worse by the most awful awful narration - Remmie Milner gave some words unexpected emphasis eg emphasis on ‘Sir’ before Richard; absolutely unable to do accents; sunable to express emotion, surprise or any emotion; she changed the book from a low key not very good historical romance to a farce. Will never listen to anything read by her again.

A good-ish story spoilt by awful narration
Revisado: 12-10-24
The reader/narrator’s accents were terrible - especially Mosca’s cockney accent and Clent’s accent and way of speaking were, for me, so irritating as to spoil the story

Historia
It is spring in 1963 and George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West's spy war with the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only on a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumour in Whitehall – unconfirmed and a little scandalous – that George Smiley might almost be happy. But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected in the most unusual of circumstances, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found.

A convoluted narrative beautifully read
Revisado: 12-04-24
The story was confusing and convoluted, too much ‘philosophising’ and agonising rather than a clear and compelling narrative. Simon Russell Beale absolutely excellent.

Historia
In unforgettable tales of innocence lost under African skies, we follow Godwin's awakening to the often savage struggle between Whites and Blacks, his horror when he is forced to fight in a civil war he detests, and his experiences as a journalist covering the country's violent transition to Black rule as Rhodesia's colonial era comes to an end and the new state of Zimbabwe is born from its bloody ashes. Mukiwa is a poignant, compelling memoir and an invaluable addition to the literature of southern Africa.

Outstanding
Revisado: 11-02-24
Brilliant writing, deeply moving and so terribly sad. He documents so well the futility and cycle of wars which benefit the power hungry, while the rest of the people, the ordinary people trying to live their lives, are left traumatised, mourning those killed, mourning destroyed communities and livelihoods.

What characters!
Revisado: 10-18-23
The characters are so brilliantly drawn, perhaps Cynthia and her awful mother in particular, but everyone else too. So sad that we don’t have Elizabeth Gaskell’s ending - one can guess at it but her own descriptions would have of course added richness exceptionally good narration by Prunella Scales.

Unspeakably dreary!
Revisado: 10-03-23
If the awfulness of 17th century England and the hardship and Puritanism of 17th century America is your thing, you’ll love this. I hated it - the savagery of revenge, the dreary characters, the well-nigh invisible women. And the narrator who can’t do accents and can’t do women was awful too.

Historia
Published in instalments in 1859, The Woman in White is often considered to be one of the very first detective novels. Although critics weren’t impressed at the time, the novel proved to be a hit with the public and has since gone on to become one of the timeless classics of the Victorian era. Following the adventures of Walter Hartright, this is a story of sleuthing, inheritance, ghosts and mistaken identity and was recently the subject of a hit TV adaptation by the BBC.

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Great story, great narration
Revisado: 08-28-23
Such an excellent portrayal of the impact of early industrialisation on towns, workers and mill owners, the role of trade unions in trying to get a better deal for the impoverished workers, and the social divide. The reversal of usual roles, with a woman rescuing a man from his financial losses is a nice touch. Margaret constantly demonstrates her awareness of social upheaval but is also haughty and class consciousBrilliant book. And Juliet Stephenson’s narration is superb.

Historia
Copenhagen author Hannah is the darling of the literary community and her novels have achieved massive critical acclaim. But nobody actually reads them, and frustrated by writer's block, Hannah has the feeling that she's doing something wrong. When she expresses her contempt for genre fiction, Hanna is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in 30 days. Scared that she will lose face, she accepts, and her editor sends her to Húsafjöður; a quiet, tight-knit village in Iceland, filled with colourful local characters - for inspiration.

Such an unlikeable protagonist that it prejudiced review of the story itself
Revisado: 07-09-23
The protagonist was so deeply unlikeable that it made the book hard to read through to the end - there really is a limit to following a narrative at whose heart is a horrible, self-absorbed person who seems, and was in my view, beyond redemption. I only finished it to know what happened (of course). Story itself wasn’t bad.

Good enough story, poor narration
Revisado: 04-09-23
A good enough story on the whole - though there were pretty boring parts like the period in France that could have done with some serious editing - but Charlie Anson’s narration spoilt it for me - I thought his narration was mostly awful.
