My eyes reading The Pickwick Papers could never enliven the book as much Mr. Kinnear’s vocal artistry. So dry and droll. I’m now going to sit in silence and soda. Maybe with the fat boy from Dingley Dell. Perfection.

Second time to the Tower and it is better, richer and sadder. This is just my vibe for the start of winter and the first snow of the season.

This is a really stupid book that presents a crazy quilt of fractured history as some kind of revelation. The only revelation here is how silly this is.

Holy cow. Every time I take in this Brontë novel, I rediscover how subversive it is. Heathcliff and Catherine deserve each other alright: they are wretched people - EB was unafraid to put the warts on her characters and I think that is probably the primary reason it has remained a classic - who doesn’t want to gawk at a train wreck, right?

The narrator gets a standing ovation - it was a revelation to hear the described tirades, weepings, mewlings and shrieks out loud - no stiff upper lips here! She was practically operatic!

Of course - we should be concentrating on Spinoza’s brilliance. I was so looking forward to hearing his ideas. But first you have to endure the truly wearisome reading by Lescault. My god. He is so bad.

I think the story is deceptively simple to listen to, but when you consider how deftly we are lead to believe the captain is a dullard and the last, very ironical sentence - I was blown away. The language, the horrifying buildup of the typhoon, the way the Author shifts “allegiance” from one protagonist to another as the story comes to its peak. Oh my.

But - it is old language and there is much we wouldn’t allow in the way of maligning people of other cultures and colors, though I think it can be argued the author also approaches this bigotry ironically, too.

This was a double header “read” with Jack London and I have to say it’s hard not to love these very masculine writers of the 19th century.

I don’t know why, having been a lifelong avid reader, I never took up this book. Shame on me for that, but if it had to be so, at least I heard it read by a wonderful voice talent and I can more fully appreciate the power of Mr. Douglass’ words. And in light of the decision in Florida to teach children that slavery had some good pony’s because it gave the slaves some skills - well - all I have to say to that is “Heavenly Union” (you’ll understand when you get to the end). It really is astounding how evil and callow and hopeless some people are. The will never give up. Ever. Unless, maybe, they are forced to listen to this book.

This narrative, an exploration from a doctoral student, earnestly aware of himself as a a gatherer of human experience and also the frailty of memory, was one of the best books I have listened to this year. I just finished the very last word and I’m writing with my heart feeling quite squeezed with emotion. The memories of his grandparents, his reverence for them was also instructive to me. Thank you, Dr. Smith. Not only are your students surely proud of your work, the rest of us are also very grateful.

Honestly, I learned a couple things and that made the listen worthwhile. Particularly on the chapters about the development of languages and gender.

I wish that the author could have read her own work. For such a compelling story did Audible really need to hire this mechanical voice?
