A Must “Read”
Revisado: 12-01-24
The sense of humor that permeates this accounting of a very specific but mostly misunderstood part of the war in Vietnam is something that all should read and appreciate. These guys risked all for the rest of us doing the unimaginable; that any of them survived to tell the story is incredible on its own. Thank you Nick for your service and for helping the rest of us appreciate and understand.

A Much Needed Story
Revisado: 07-15-23
The Vietnam era for those of us who lived through it was a negative and bleak time and experience.
Our government’s repeated lies helped turn the younger generation against those who bravely risked or sacrificed their lives. Having no exert strategy and abandoning those Vietnamese who toiled to ensure a free Vietnam was heart-wrenching and appalling.
It’s so good to hear of one man who risked everything to do what our government should have done for these trapped people, who our service men and women had given their everything to help, was refreshing and just plain good to know. Thank you, John.

Historia
In the Vietnam War, American "rough riders" drove trucks through hostile territory delivering supplies, equipment, ammunition, weapons, fuel, and reinforcements to troops fighting on the war's ever-shifting front lines. But, all too often, the convoys themselves became the front lines. Frank McAdams, a Marine Corps lieutenant, learned that the hard way during a tour of duty that began right after the 1968 Tet Offensive and the siege at Khe Sanh.

Another perspective of the war we waged in the Nam from a very different but important point of view.
Frank made the most of having his creativity and talent as a natural leader stifled by the REMFs.
I highly recommend this book.

A Different Perspective
Revisado: 06-20-23
Boy it’s sure good that Ted’s daughter had this book published. I have read numerous WWII books and none from the perspective of escape and evasion to this degree.
Also, not in such a hilarious manner, which is astonishing given the gravity of the situations he faced. Quite a character. It’s a must read.

Historia
A hell-bent-for-leather fighter pilot, Elwyn G. Righetti remains one of the most unknown, yet compelling, colorful, and controversial commanders of World War II. Arriving late to the war, he led the England-based 55th Fighter Group against the Nazis during the closing months of the fight with a no-holds-barred aggressiveness that transformed the group from a middling organization of no reputation into a headline-grabbing team that had to make excuses to no one. Indeed, Righetti's boldness paid off as he quickly achieved ace status.

We Need to Remember our Fallen
Revisado: 05-27-23
This is an account of a remarkable man who possessed a sense of duty that most cannot comprehend. Why did he make that final gun run when his plane was already badly damaged? What was his final fate? Read by the one-and-only, Joe Barrett, it is a real “page-Turner” that you will want to listen to hour after hour.

Historia
On the day that Roswell K. Doughty graduated from Boston University, he also received a commission as a second lieutenant in the army of the United States of America. It was not until 1942 that he was called to active duty—to face some of the toughest fighting of the Second World War. He subsequently saw action in North Africa, then at the disastrous Salerno landings in Italy - where the Allied divisions involved suffered 4,000 casualties—about which the author reveals that suspected intelligence breaches led to the Allies' plans becoming known to the Germans.

Well Worth the “Read”
Revisado: 05-23-23
I have listened to numerous WWII books and this was one of the most interesting. Major Doughty was an extremely rare individual who combined intellect with common sense with a hard-charging warrior mentality. But he was a warrior by necessity and a hard-charger by character. I respect that he was willing to risk his own career by standing up to inadequate and/or incompetent higher-ranking officers in order to help his men. Such qualities are rare.
I learned a great deal about this one part of the army’s fight through Italy then into the Vogues Mtns of France and then into Germany. I think you will also.

Historia
On the killing ground that was the island of Guadalcanal, a 2,000-yard-long ridge rose from the jungle canopy. Behind it lay the all-important air base of Henderson Field. And if Henderson Field fell, it would mean the almost certain death or capture of all 12,500 marines on the island. But the marines positioned on the ridge were no normal fighters - they were the hard-fighting men of Edson's Raiders, an elite fighting unit within an already elite Marine Corps.

A truly humble recounting of a hellacious period in our and Japan’s history. Having lived in Japan, I have heard about the war from both perspectives. All war is hell. Joe Barrett is the perfect reader (of any book really) and brings special meaning to the narrative. Everyone should listen.

A Great Read…Listen
Revisado: 06-12-21
This is a low-key sort of police who-done-it thriller. As a cop myself, I will say there are several deviations from acceptable best-practices, especially at the end when Gunther is more than justified to shoot in defense of another and given the bad guy’s history. Still the book has a believable progression and interesting storyline. The performance by Tom Taylorson was excellent. I highly recommend this book.

Amazing and Real
Revisado: 06-08-21
I highly recommend this book. In its portrayal of the war with all its horror, it shows the human side, from how members of the Silent Service treated each other to the raw feelings each had in anger and in love. In other words, it portrayed the submariners realistically. R.C Bray’s performance is spectacular. It’s just the whole package.
