Historia
Alicia has been out of grad school for months. She has no career prospects and lives with her mom, who won’t stop texting her macabre news stories and reminders to pick up items from the grocery store. Then, one evening, the Jamaican water deity River Mumma appears to Alicia, telling her that she has twenty-four hours to scour the city for her missing comb. Alicia doesn’t understand why River Mumma would choose her. She can’t remember all the legends her relatives told her, unlike her retail co-worker Heaven, who can reel off Jamaican folklore by heart.

Disappointing
Revisado: 03-12-25
If you like ghost stories (for Jamaicans and other Caribbean people duppy stories told with a mix of Anancy flair) for adults, this will probably be a good read for you. For me it was ok. It did keep my interest as far as me wanting to know how it ended. It isn’t a book I would read again.

Historia
In April 1975, Ralph White was asked by his boss to transfer from the Bangkok branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank to the Saigon Branch. He was tasked with closing the branch if and when it appeared that Saigon would fall to the North Vietnamese army and ensure the safety of the senior Vietnamese employees. But when he arrived, he realized the situation in Saigon was far more perilous than he had imagined. The senior staff members there urged him to evacuate the entire staff of the branch and their families, which was far more than he was authorized to do.

One of the best books I've read in a while!
Revisado: 03-06-25
Such a great storyline! The author did a bang-up job of taking us through the stress of the end of the Vietnam War for those still in Vietnam, in particular Saigon, and not just the Americans, but also the Vietnamese on both sides of the war. I served in the Marine Corps with many Vietnam War veterans who shared stories with me of their time there, and so much of what is written in this book rings true. It was a book which leaves one thinking about the morals, ethics, and strength it takes to do certain jobs and also to care for people whether they look like you or not. I highly recommend it!

Authenticity at its core
Revisado: 12-01-24
I struggled at the start of this book but chose to press on. I’m so happy that I did because it was an authentic voice into the history and culture of Hawaii. Having lived there and visited more times than I can count I recognized many of the events/experiences even though names/places may have been changed. To understand and fully appreciate Hawaii one must understand and appreciate the people, the history, and the culture. The author did a fantastic job of creating this fictional book based on much truth.

Revisado: 10-16-24
It was difficult to follow the story. There is quite a bit of repetition and skipping back and forth. I’m really sad that I couldn’t give this a better review because I have loved the other books I have read by this author.

Outstanding book, made me not want to put it down
Revisado: 03-02-24
This book was so well written and superbly narrated that I did a marathon read! It is a wonderfully pieced together story of family, friendship, the Windrush Immigration time period in England to the present. It hits on racism, marriage, how the aged and lonely are treated and the perseverance of people who want to and are willing to take the necessary steps to right a wrong. The main character, Hubert Bird, is a Jamaican who did what the majority of immigrants do - cross the waters for a chance at a better life. For the 60+ years of his life that is covered, he uses his very humble beginnings to create a space that many, including those who were once his enemies; come together in the end.

Nothing really new
Revisado: 03-02-24
Decent book, sort of formulary for me. The premise does take you inside the world of knockoffs made by the same companies who make the real items. The storyline skirts friendships, loyalty, deviousness and international crime.

This is one book I'm glad the author narrated; she did an excellent job! I had a few laugh out loud moments, but it was mostly chuckles and head nods in agreement regarding life situations. Because I don't watch the late-night talk/entertainment shows, I had not heard of this comedienne, but after reading her book I'll certainly be watching out for her.
