Interesting, but almost didn't finish it

OK, I chose this because it happened to pop up, I needed to spend my 2 monthly Audible credits, and I really like Harry Potter. It was interesting to listen to, mostly, though there were some parts where I almost gave up because the amount of (intended or not) bragginess kind of got to me. I did enjoy hearing about the making of the Harry Potter movies and some insights into some of the other actors, which was the original reason I was interested in listening. But it was kind of sad to hear about the hard times he went through later when he was trying to figure out who he was as an adult. It sounds like he's learned from his experiences and is doing better. It was nice to hear it actually being read by Tom Felton himself. It would have been a completely different experience otherwise.

An interesting account from an insider

This was an interesting account of the FLDS and Warren Jeffs' rise to power by his half-brother. It is basically a memoir of the life of Wallace Jeffs, and the experiences he had growing up in a polygamist family, and then becoming a polygamist himself as an adult, before finally losing faith and facing the consequences of leaving the FLDS. Not much is explained about the theology, so it may be more understandable if you have an LDS background, as I do, although most of what is covered in the book has nothing to do with the LDS church or how polygamy was once practiced in the LDS church. However, LDS listeners may be put off by the harsh language and explicit sexual content. The book could have used some more editing - it is confusing in places due to skipping around, but it is an interesting and even entertaining listen. The narrator reminds me of a cross between Wil Wheaton and Stephen King (in a good way).

Great way to learn the material

I was originally licensed as a Technician in 1999. I had some years of inactivity and then got back into the hobby a couple years ago. I stumbled across the author's Technician book and used it to help me get back up to speed.

I had hoped that he would also create a General book, but I ended up getting impatient and studied using a different method (I used a website that helps you just memorize the correct answers). Then, 2 days before I was planning to take the test, I discovered that he had made this book. So I listened to it as much as I could, took and passed the test, and then kept listening so I could understand all the questions and answers that I had memorized.

This is a terrific book for learning the material. I can't recommend it highly enough. I've since also passed the Extra test, but am looking forward to the Extra book so I can learn everything I memorized for that, as well. ;)

Made a great review before studying for my General

I got my Technician license back in the 90s, and had been inactive for some time. I've recently gotten back into it, and am interested in upgrading to General, but when I started studying I realized they expected you to still remember all the Technician material. So I listened to this, and it was a great review. However, I'm not sure parts of it are quite basic enough for people with no prior experience with electronics.

The author does a great job reading his own material (which seems kind of rare). I do hope he also does one for General and Extra.

Cotton candy

Total
2 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 05-05-11

This book was like cotton candy - appealing to look at but very little actual substance. I enjoy speculative fiction, but parts of it were so unbelievable I found myself laughing. And one major error - why would our hero be questioned about why he was spared? If he really had forgotten everything, that would only have made him suspect there was something going on. It should have been pretty obvious to them, and you'd think they'd have not wanted him to even realize it was significant. (Hopefully that makes sense - I'm trying not to spoil anything.)

I do appreciate that there wasn't as much sexual content in the book as there easily could have been.

The Stand meets Dreamcatcher

Total
4 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 01-29-10

This book was much better than most of what King has written in a long time. I really enjoyed both the story and the way the narration was done. It was not very original - combing elements of previous books, most notably The Stand and Dreamcatcher - but it was still very engaging and I actually started missing some of the characters when I realized I was nearing the end.

I do wish that King didn't have the tendency to just blow things up when he runs into a dead end in some of his otherwise very good novels. It seems like things are just getting going, and then an explosion occurs (The Stand, Under the Dome) or there is a drive-by shooting (Bag of Bones) which forces things to come to a quicker than natural conclusion.

Suspenseful

I've been looking for new authors to try, and thought this book sounded interesting, since I like to read horror. The publisher's description is not very accurate (it didn't even get the victim's name right), and the book turned out to be better than I expected. Be aware that it does contain graphic violence and explicit sex - often combined.

There are some good stories in this collection, but the Audible version needs to be redone. There are some sentences that get repeated, and one of the stories is cut off before it's finished.

Not Saul's best work

Total
3 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 04-13-09

Although it was nice to see Saul getting away from his recurring theme of children being the antagonists, and using modern technology and themes (such as MySpace) in the story, this is not his best work. It is full of shallow characters that few will be able to identify with, living in a world where silicon enhancements are more common than eyeglasses. The description must have been based on what Saul thought the book would be about before it was actually written, as it is very different from what actually occurs (even the names are mostly wrong). Also, the author really comes out of the closet on this one, so if that bothers you, you may want to skip it.

Nightmare House Audiolibro Por Douglas Clegg arte de portada

Not Clegg's best work

Total

I have considered myself a fan of Douglas Clegg ever since reading "Neverland" several years ago. This book was quite a disappointment in comparison. I basically had to force myself to listen all the way through.
