Historia
Shyima Hall was born in Egypt on September 29, 1989, the seventh child of desperately poor parents. When she was eight, her parents sold her into slavery. Shyima then moved two hours away to Egypt's capitol city of Cairo to live with a wealthy family and serve them eighteen hours a day, seven days a week. When she was ten, her captors moved to Orange County, California, and smuggled Shyima with them. Two years later, an anonymous call from a neighbor brought about the end of Shyima's servitude - but her journey to true freedom was far from over.

Narration Wasn’t Great, Story Was Slow
Revisado: 03-22-25
I physically cringed when the narrator did Arabic accents. The story had a very slow pace and a lot of information that could have been left out entirely. All in all, it was long-winded and dull- which is a feat considering the subject matter.

Historia
Joyce Aparo seemed to be the perfect single mother. She doted on her sixteen-year-old daughter, Karin, encouraging her musical ability and lavishing affection on her. But behind closed doors, Joyce was a terror. For thirteen years, she beat Karin savagely and demeaned her relentlessly. When Karin met the troubled yet brilliant Dennis Coleman, the two fell head-over-heels. But Joyce disapproved—so she had to die.

Kind of Boring
Revisado: 02-23-25
You would think a story about a daughter being abused and manipulated by her mother, orchestrating her mother’s murder, and the ensuing trial would be exciting and wild stuff. However, this book was unbelievably boring. I skipped several chapters.

Historia
Iowa housewife Tracey Pittman Roberts seemed to have it all: natural beauty, three loving children, and a fairy-tale second marriage to a wealthy, handsome businessman. But beneath the happy façade was a woman who used lies, manipulation, sex, ugly allegations, blackmail - and even murder - to serve her own selfish ends. In 2001, police rushed to Tracey's home after a shooting left her vulnerable young neighbor dead. Tracey claimed it was an act of self-defense. Nine gunshot wounds - and a decades-long trail of extortion and fraud - said otherwise.

Overall Enjoyable
Revisado: 01-30-25
I liked the story, and I found it interesting. It was easy to follow, flowed smoothly, and held my interest.
The only thing I really *REALLY* did not enjoy was the narrator. Every single time he read a sentence in quotes he would change to a higher, falsetto voice. It was very distracting and annoying. The worst part is when he would read ONE WORD in that falsetto voice and then instantly switch back to his own.
Listen to it, you’ll see what I mean.

Historia
Was Jason the monster who bludgeoned his beautiful wife to death, leaving his toddler alone for hours to walk through her blood? If so - would he get away with it? Murder on Birchleaf Drive documents the gripping tale of a family’s marathon quest for justice, confounding crime scene evidence, the persistence of law enforcement officers, and riveting courtroom combat.

Long and Repetitive
Revisado: 01-02-25
It was very repetitive and not terribly interesting. The narrator was just awful and kept doing these very over-the-top voices for the characters (which makes sense since Google says that he is a professional voice actor for anime and cartoons). I did appreciate that the author didn’t make his personal feelings on Jason’s guilt/ innocence evident like some other TCWs (looking at you Jane Velez-Mitchell).

Historia
In 1995, Austin, Texas was rocked by the brutal murder of Regina Hartwell. Even though Regina's body was burned beyond recognition, police had two suspects within days. One was the beautiful ex-cheerleader who was the object of Regina's desire. The other was a man who would take the fall for murder . . . In this new edition of her bestselling book Wasted, true crime master Suzy Spencer chronicles a fatal love triangle as three lives are driven out of control by sexual desire, drugs, and shocking childhood demons.

Just So Bad
Revisado: 12-27-24
I try not to be too judgmental about true crime books because I know that all you can really do is lay out the facts and try to dress it up a little to make it interesting for the reader, but wow, I guess the latter half of that statement did not make it into Spencer’s edits at ALL. This book was so dang boring from about the 55% mark forward. The courtroom chapters almost caused me to weep with frustration because it just would not end. I can’t believe Spencer makes her living doing this! The story of a “lesbian love triangle” should be a page turner, but hoo buddy this put me to sleep more than once.

Historia
To his parishioners, minister Matt Baker seemed a pious and good man. To his wife, Kari, he was a devoted husband and caring father. Always sunny and vivacious, Kari never questioned their frequent relocations from one small Texas Baptist church to another. Even when tragedy struck, Kari remained strong - until one day, inexplicably, she took her own life.

Kathryn Casey Does It Again
Revisado: 11-17-24
There was so little coverage of this murder case that, if I hadn’t read this book, I’d have never known about it. The story was well-told and held my interest in a way that only Casey can manage. I recommend this if only to encourage others to learn about the wolf in sheep’s clothing that is Matt Baker.

Historia
On January 14, 2018, a 17-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings - ranging in age from two to 29 - were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.

These Kids Need A Happy Ending
Revisado: 11-08-24
The writing was done well, though why John Glatt felt the need to repeat things several times is a mystery… Maybe he had a word count to meet? But it was tolerable and I felt that he did a good job of laying out the details in an accessible manner. I feel that I learned a lot about the Turpin children, the tragedy, and their “parents”. I don’t think it matters at all that Louise Turpin was molested by her grandfather, other than to illustrate why she’s such a monstrous human being. It certainly didn’t make me feel any sympathy for her.
The narration was unbearable. I don’t know what the narrator is going for, why he narrates like a drunk AI, or what the purpose of that particular tone and cadence is, but oh my God man. Please knock that off immediately and take some vocal lessons.

Historia
"I was one of 28 children born to my dad and his three wives. Indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that I resided among the righteous, I was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the Prophet. I would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. But my innocence didn't last long." Flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been rescuing women and children from the FLDS.

We Get It, You’re A Bad A**
Revisado: 11-06-24
This story was so hard to listen to over the sound of Flora Jessop sniffing her own farts. If this is a story about her experience with polygamy and the work she does to help other women get out of the same situation, then why are we subjected to hours of Flora Jessop waffling on about how she’s such a hardcore hero of the people? If you do good work, the work speaks for itself.

Yikes
Revisado: 11-04-24
The writing is terrible and Sarah Allred comes across like a head case.
The narration certainly didn’t do any favors. All in all, skip this one for your own sanity. The ick factor is off the freaking charts. There are better written and more interesting FLDS books offered on Audible.

Historia
Everyone has wanted their favorite book to be real, if only for a moment. Everyone has wished to meet their favorite characters, if only for a day. But be careful in that wish, for even a history laid in ink can be repaid in flesh and blood, and reality is far deadlier than fiction...especially on Addington Isle.

It Was Just Okay
Revisado: 10-22-24
I am the minority, I understand that right off the bat, but I didn’t really understand the hype that this book received.
The characters were interesting, and the plot was alright, but it didn’t sweep me away like everyone swore up and down it would.
The author is clearly a talented guy, and he came up with an original idea, but I still found the story kind of boring. The ending was not happy, not in the traditional sense, but I suppose it was the happiest ending you could expect.
I think Durham has a lot of talent, and I think he’s got the right ingredients to churn out page-turners; this just wasn’t for me.
