Historia
Bestselling Hollywood biographer and film historian Scott Eyman tells the story of Charlie Chaplin’s fall from grace. In the aftermath of World War II, Chaplin was criticized for being politically liberal and internationalist in outlook. He had never become a US citizen, something that would be held against him as xenophobia set in when the postwar Red Scare took hold. In Charlie Chaplin vs. America, Scott Eyman explores the life and times of the movie genius who brought us such masterpieces as City Lights and Modern Times.

Excellent Biog of this Complex Artist
Revisado: 04-20-25
This honest biography paints the brilliant, but also flawed aspects of this world renowned creative genius.
Yet again we see that extremism in high positions of political power leads to attacks on people which are ridiculous and cruel.
Alas .. We’re seeing it today!

Historia
They were part of the Baby Boomer vanguard, three boys thrown together in a 1950s Southern California subdivision looking like most other boys of that era. Under coonskin hats they ran free all summer long inventing their own games and endless challenges, fought imaginary Indians and pirates in a nearby orange grove, and on occasion battled a neighborhood bully or two. Their greatest enemy, however, was an infectious disease called polio – a paralyzing scourge that maimed and too-often killed little kids.

A fairly honest walk through the good and not-so-good memories of post-WWII suburbia. It would benefit everyone to take a stark look at a horrific, preventable disease in this strange era of science denial!

Historia
Created in the aftermath of World War II, the Central Intelligence Agency relied on women even as it attempted to channel their talents and keep them down. Women sent cables, made dead drops, and maintained the agency’s secrets. Despite discrimination—even because of it—women who started as clerks, secretaries, or unpaid spouses rose to become some of the CIA’s shrewdest operatives.

I had NO idea!
Revisado: 01-10-25
As an historian, I often note that two things can be true at the same time: the United States has always been a beacon of shining opportunity and decency; but has also had a thread of narrow-minded arrogance .. sometimes with cruel and deadly results. This riveting book clarifies some of our greatness and failures. I had no idea that women played such an important role in spy craft.

An Angst Fest
Revisado: 12-30-24
An implausible family secret: the kidnapped Indian daughter who takes a long time to realize she’s adopted? who later walks away from her marriage? A man who punches his wife then goes on a long, suffering trek? Two parallel stories - each a slog of meaningless angst.

Two very distant and distinct “families” are connected by an international crime. Then (if the reader releases disbelief) their connection is an engaging adventure.

Historia
On Winston Churchill’s first day as prime minister, Adolf Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. Poland and Czechoslovakia had already fallen, and the Dunkirk evacuation was just two weeks away. For the next 12 months, Hitler would wage a relentless bombing campaign, killing 45,000 Britons. It was up to Churchill to hold his country together and persuade President Franklin Roosevelt that Britain was a worthy ally - and willing to fight to the end. In The Splendid and the Vile, Erik Larson shows how Churchill taught the British people "the art of being fearless."

A Giant Man at a Pivotal Time
Revisado: 11-09-24
Larson’s usual honesty and thorough research brought me back to my parents’ era. My awe for Churchill’s brilliance increased, and I always delight in his personality. I agonize that throughout history, a few evil men can cause vast sweeps of loss and suffering. Military details might bog some readers down, but I found them to be necessary. What respect I have for the massive, complex efforts that went into the war effort! WWII, the Greatest Generation indeed!

For years she has advised expectant mothers through their pregnancies, guided them through the tortures of labor, and then helped them heal.

Tough life for most of our farming and mining ancestors - especially the women.
Revisado: 08-27-24
Lovely descriptive prose; a little tiresome at times. This story pulled the reader in; though the protagonist’s forgiving her husband was a stretch. Intriguing mystery was appreciated. The reader’s pronunciation of Nev-ahh-da grated on the ears, but otherwise she did a very good job.
