Psychopaths handbook
Revisado: 09-21-24
Half way thru here. Gonna leave a review. There is a directive nature in the words as written, "you have to hurt someone" in order to seduce them..... and many other similar directives or..... life hacks? It's definitely a handbook for how to try to be a psychopath, manipulating others (referred to as 'targets') for your own reward. Feels icky. Amazon suggested this and it was interesting in the begining because of the philosophical/psychological intro..... but man. got weird in the middle. while I likely will finish it because it's good to be aware of some human behaviors, it's difficult to keep hearing, "you have to..." and then followed by a psychopathic manipulative task.

Historia
“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

holy S-word bat person
Revisado: 11-29-23
I know Steven King from people talking about him and seeing his name on books at the store. I have never read his books or seen his screenplays/TV shows, horror gives me bad dreams. With that I know he is successful and has something to offer, and likely did when he finished this book over 20 years ago as well. What do you get when a successful professional shares many of their methods? Inspiration. This book is inspirational. The audio version has some extras as well.

incomplete at best, emotionally driven
Revisado: 02-24-23
when discussing sustainability, the author has the audacity to claim the sun will burn out, recognizing science to quite the degree, yet can't wrap their head around how a hybrid car is more/relatively sustainable vs.the-status-quo.... or how to argue why plastic or wood is sustainable in relative terms, just pointing out circuitous arguments. too many absolutes drawn by cherry picking. I was suggested this book at a housing meeting.... I'll just focus on helping people make better choices by building what is right rather than complain about what is wrong in an incomplete fashion.

not quite American English pronunciation ...
Revisado: 12-07-22
forfeiture. four-fit-chure... he says it strangely tho. appellate. ah-pell-it... he says it not that way. it sort of makes sense but seems strange how some of the normal words are pronounced. sufficient. he says sue-fish-ent. sue? those are just a few. anyway, it's read out loud just some of the words seem not from California, Oregon, Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Maryland.... I spent ten years in the military as a linguist and met a lot of Americans from all over the country. I'm from southern California. I've never heard these off pronunciations. I think it's easy enough to know what the word is, but.... anyway, it's ok. just strange in that one way.

The Devil comes to Moscow, but he isn't all bad; Pontius Pilate sentences a charismatic leader to his death, but yearns for redemption; and a writer tries to destroy his greatest tale, but discovers that manuscripts don't burn. Multi-layered and entrancing, blending sharp satire with glorious fantasy, The Master and Margarita is ceaselessly inventive and profoundly moving. In its imaginative freedom and raising of eternal human concerns, it is one of the world's great novels.

that was strange
Revisado: 10-27-22
I listened to a guy who said he liked this book a lot, so I got it on audible. listened to it. it's difficult to follow or the story is just strange... For being so against "post modernists" he sure has opposite taste in fiction.

Historia
In this groundbreaking history of the modern American metropolis, Richard Rothstein explodes the myth that America's cities came to be racially divided through de facto segregation - that is, through individual prejudices, income differences, or the actions of private institutions like banks and real estate agencies. Rather, he incontrovertibly makes clear that it was de jure segregation - the laws and policy decisions passed by local, state, and federal governments - that actually promoted the discriminatory patterns that continue to this day.

I did not want this, I needed it.
Revisado: 10-19-22
there is a lot brought under the inspection lamp in this book. I will further look into the info to verify. this book made me mad, sad and slightly hopeless. I'm a veteran going to college majoring in architecture. This book simply reenforces my belief in less expensive homes but now I have even more reason to succeed. our history is messy. I want to be part of the solution/cleanup.

Historia
In the last decades, America has gone to war as supposed defenders of democracy. The War on Terror was waged to protect the West from the dangers of Islamists. US soldiers are stationed in more than 800 locations across the world to act as the righteous arbiters of the rule of law. In this book, Andrew Cockburn brilliantly dissects the intentions behind Washington's martial appetites.

the title is incorrect
Revisado: 10-16-22
so, there are a lot of statements as a matter of fact but not much by way of reference matter to verify fact. some strange things too like making the A-10 reference about how it will be decommissioned in 2015 but then no mention immediately of current day bases still employing the A-10 such as the 25th in osan. but there was reference to how it stuck around later but.... did the audi le narrators mis some lines? maybe I skipped forward so smoothly I couldn't tell I missed content? there were some good points that I have seen personally from being in the military for ten years but lots of this book is expanded emotional hyperbole.... less backed up fact. also the title is wrong. it's, sure, the spoils of war but it's missing "and what I think about the economic mechanisms in government" not tied to war or the military outside of the fact that there are dollars in the military and dollars in the banks. lots of talk bout the mid 00's but just no military connections. housing bubble and Saudi money ...... with no connection to how they are the spoils of war, military or otherwise.

Historia
An inspiring guide from Dolly Chugh, an award-winning social psychologist at the New York University Stern School of Business, on how to confront difficult issues including sexism, racism, inequality, and injustice so that you can make the world (and yourself) better. Many of us believe in equality, diversity, and inclusion. But how do we stand up for those values in our world? The Person You Mean to Be is the smart, "semi-bold" person’s guide to fighting for what you believe in. Dolly reveals the surprising causes of inequality, grounded in the "psychology of good people".

tuff to say what to make of it
Revisado: 02-20-22
Trying to be cognizant of all minorities and unknowns on my end. I don't know how to embrace the idea/task of treating someone differently based on their skin color or perceived ethnicity. It's super simple to be ignorant especially when privilege is holding the veil and or blinders. This book goes over some of that. you likely will learn some things you don't know. Like many books references are not abundant (in the audiobook form that is). so, one is left to verify any claims resolving from surveys or behavior experiments/measures. I would have like to hear more hard facts cited like census records. I saw this in the main office at work so I got the audible and listened. if you have never focused on this subject this book would be a good thing to intake. if you are more versed on the subject then you may be only licking up sprinkles here and there.
