Historia
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Historia
In the eyes of eighteen-year-old Hua Hsu, the problem with Ken—with his passion for Dave Matthews, Abercrombie & Fitch, and his fraternity—is that he is exactly like everyone else. Ken, whose Japanese American family has been in the United States for generations, is mainstream; for Hua, the son of Taiwanese immigrants, who makes ’zines and haunts Bay Area record shops, Ken represents all that he defines himself in opposition to. The only thing Hua and Ken have in common is that, however they engage with it, American culture doesn’t seem to have a place for either of them.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

Historia
With stark poignancy and political dispassion, Tightrope draws us deep into an "other America". The authors tell this story, in part, through the lives of some of the children with whom Kristof grew up in rural Yamhill, Oregon, an area that prospered for much of the 20th century but has been devastated in the last few decades as blue-collar jobs disappeared. About one-quarter of the children on Kristof's old school bus died in adulthood from drugs, alcohol, suicide, or reckless accidents.

Historia
Hailed by The New York Times as "a marvel of storytelling", The Things They Carried’s portrayal of the boots-on-the-ground experience of soldiers in the Vietnam War is a landmark in war writing. Now, three-time Emmy Award winner-Bryan Cranston, star of the hit TV series Breaking Bad, delivers an electrifying performance that walks the book’s hallucinatory line between reality and fiction and highlights the emotional power of the spoken word.

I'm not typically drawn to "war" books - fiction or non-fiction. But the storytelling in this book is eloquent, relatable, thought-provoking and heartbreaking. A must-read!

A Story that Stays With You
Revisado: 01-20-19
This is one of those books that you keep thinking about long after finishing it. The characters, their ups and downs, the meaning of it all and how meaningless our problems today seem. This book shifts ahead from the devastating numbers connected to the AIDS epedemic to the stories of those impacted by it. By experiencing it with them you begin to feel the layered depth of their tragedy; not just the men who died but those who were left behind. A must-read.

Historia
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Its Brilliance is in Its Bizzare Story
Revisado: 01-20-19
This highly poignant read is wrapped up in its almost farcical nature with a bow of dark comedy. The idea behind enjoying this book and seeing its depth is to accept how unrealistic it is from page 1.

Historia
What happens when the President of the United States governs one Tweet at a time? When the elected leader of the free world may not have a firm grasp on the names of government agencies, much less an understanding of their intricate inner-workings? In the days following the 2016 inauguration, government personnel searched for answers that didn’t exist, while White House staff scoured halls for employees who would never be appointed.

Required Reading for Americans
Revisado: 01-20-19
While this book was clearly a response to these political times (i.e. Trump Administration) it is an educational, eye-opening read for Americans, no matter what their political preference, zip code or age. You're guaranteed to learn something new about the many offerings and accomplishment of our government and what truly makes America the great nation it is.

A Book You'll Feel
Revisado: 06-03-18
A relevant read for our times dealing with subjects like class, race, the legal system and the incarceration. But what is brilliant about this book is that all of this is a subtle undercurrent to timeless themes of loyalty, love and lasting relationships. I felt each character and the narration only brings it to life further! One of the best reads for me so far in 2018!

Historical Yet Relatable
Revisado: 12-20-17
A good story will transport you to another world and Rules of Civility does just this. But what's a delicious surprise is that you realize that the people of 1930s NYC weren't too terribly different than we are when it comes to aspirations, detours and the journey we call life.
Too deep? Then don't worry. You can hang out in the glamour of Manhattan the whole time, eating up Towles' eloquent and detailed narrative, and still come away satisfied.
