Fun romp sequel
Revisado: 01-08-25
The narrator gives a great read and shows Molly’s personality through her narration. The plot is pretty predictable, but the characters are vivid and well drawn. This is like a nice little palate cleaner between more serious novels for me.

Historia
Authors June Hayward and Athena Liu were supposed to be twin rising stars: same year at Yale, same debut year in publishing. But Athena’s a cross-genre literary darling, and June didn’t even get a paperback release. Nobody wants stories about basic white girls, June thinks. So when June witnesses Athena’s death in a freak accident, she acts on impulse: she steals Athena’s just-finished masterpiece, an experimental novel about the unsung contributions of Chinese laborers to the British and French war efforts during World War I.

I knew one of the big “surprises” from almost the beginning—-but I was kept guessing about almost everything else during the book. Funny. Smart. Twisty. Loved it.

Historia
Jonathan Franzen’s novels are celebrated for their unforgettably vivid characters and for their keen-eyed take on contemporary America. Now, in Crossroads, Franzen ventures back into the past and explores the history of two generations. With characteristic humor and complexity, and with even greater warmth, he conjures a world that resonates powerfully with our own.

A fabulously written and narrated event
Revisado: 09-12-24
I have avoided Jonathan Franzen’s work for a long time. I have no idea why. After devouring this, I started looking for all of his work. This book was phenomenally well-written, and I’m still thinking about the message, the allegories, the metaphors. The narrator is one of the best I’ve experienced—his range and acting ability brought the writing and this family to life.

Historia
When the misanthropic Dr Miriam Price wakes up dead, her day has only just started to go wrong. With everyone mistakenly thinking she killed herself, she's condemned to half a century in Limbo as a 'Death By Misadventure' - unless she can prove that she was murdered. Unable to communicate with anyone living, Miriam's investigative options look decidedly limited.

I loved the storyline, but the author also made me laugh out loud at some of the dialogue—in a good way. The narrator was excellent, and the only thing I don’t understand is why this isn’t a huge bestseller. Easy read, fun read, smart read.

Historia
Idlewild is a tiny, artsy Quaker high school in lower Manhattan. Students call their teachers by their first names, there are no grades, and every day begins with 20 minutes of contemplative silence in the Meetinghouse. It is during one of those meetings that an airplane hits the Twin Towers. For two Idlewild outcasts, 9/11 serves as the first day of an intense 18-month friendship. Fay is prickly, aloof, and obsessed with gay men; Nell is shy, sensitive, and obsessed with Fay. The two of them bond and spend all their waking hours giddily parsing their environment for homoerotic subtext.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. Have never played a video or computer game
Revisado: 01-24-23
I loved this book because 1. It introduces me to the world of gaming (I’m 63, and the only game I ever played was Pong) and 2. Because the book has innumerable layers and twists and turns and the ending, while not a complete surprise, was really not predictable. The book has a literary weight, but is easy to read, and an in depth knowledge of game design, which was easy do follow. Not your usual book, by far, and I highly recommend it. One star off for the performance because the female narrator was great, but it was occasionally difficult to tell exactly who was speaking in the dialogue-rich book. It would have helped to have a male narrator to offset her voice.

Indian American journalist Smita has returned to India to cover a story, but reluctantly: long ago she and her family left the country with no intention of ever coming back. As she follows the case of Meena—a Hindu woman attacked by members of her own village and her own family for marrying a Muslim man—Smita comes face to face with a society where tradition carries more weight than one’s own heart, and a story that threatens to unearth the painful secrets of Smita’s own past.

Ending both predictable and unpredictable
Revisado: 01-07-23
I knew the ending before the fourth or fifth chapter, but I was also wonderfully surprised and intrigued as the book progressed. A haunting portrait of the divided India, which also speaks of the religious and ethical divides that every culture possesses. Interesting, compelling characters, and the overarching theme of honor killings was both tragic and inspiring. The narration was 10/10.

Glad it was an audio book
Revisado: 12-27-22
When I started this book, I wasn’t particularly entranced. For one thing, the narration by the person performing Morgan’s part, seemed artificial, and all of her sentences seemed to end as a question. I was pretty sure that I knew exactly where we were going in the book, and where it would end.
I was wrong. Part one ended where I thought the entire book would end. And then there are parts two, and part three. They were fascinated. The story was woven in narrated, with much more depth, and beauty. The plot was intriguing, and not predictable.
If I had read this as a physical book, I would’ve put it down before I even got to the end of part one. As it is, I grew to love the characters, the narrators, and the writing. I was wondering where it would go until almost the very end. I’m so glad that I stuck with this book.
And I’m even more glad that I chose to read it via audiobook.

Revisado: 12-12-22
I knew that many people loved this book but I wasn’t sure. So much about what is home, who is family, what transcends culture. If this were a physical book, I wouldn’t have been able to put it down—the plot was that tantalizing, the characters so real, the narration so fabulous.
