Historia
Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was an intrepid explorer and the most famous scientist of his age. His restless life was packed with adventure and discovery, whether climbing the highest volcanoes in the world or racing through anthrax-infested Siberia. He came up with a radical vision of nature, that it was a complex and interconnected global force and did not exist for man's use alone. Ironically, his ideas have become so accepted and widespread that he has been nearly forgotten.

Highly Entertaining
Revisado: 04-25-21
While listening to this book, I had the impression that I was hearing the story first hand, not being read to. The narrator was the storyteller not simply a reader. Though not terribly familiar with Humboldt himself, I like how the lives of several well known people were tied into the storyline.

Written in a down to earth style by person who really knows what he's talking about. Bought the book after listening so that I could congitate over the ideas presented . I think of it as a prequel to his latest book.

Historia
Evolutionary theory has long established that humans are animals: Modern Homo sapiens are primates who share an ancestor with monkeys and other great apes. Our genome is 98 percent identical to a chimpanzee's. And yet we think of ourselves as exceptional. Are we? In this original and entertaining tour of life on Earth, Adam Rutherford explores the profound paradox of the "human animal".

I find Dr. Rutherford a very good read and an even better listen to. I can't imagine anyone else reading his works that would give one the feeling of talking to you from across a cafe table. He is writing about things he has come to believe and he is not afraid to say when he disagrees.

Not the complete course
Revisado: 05-24-19
This production is the audio track for a video course. The instructor keeps referring to diagrams and pictures for explanations. The problem is that if you buy this version of the course you don't get to see what he is continually referring to. I didn't know about the video version until I saw it listed on the Amazon website. The videos must be terrific as the instructor sounds interesting.

The presentation has a well developed mix of literature to exemplify the way language has evolved and how literature has had an effect on that process. t
The professor makes no attempt to hide his enthusiasm for the subject. Or, if did try, he failed miserably.

Historia
Science is humanity's greatest achievement. It ranges from the study of the universe itself to the smallest particles of matter contained within it - and everything in between. If you want to better understand our physical world, as most of us do, gaining a basic understanding of science itself is profoundly important - yet many are intimidated by the breathtaking scope of such an endeavor. Now an award-winning science teacher has taken out the intimidation, harnessing that breathtaking scope into a series of 60 exciting, comprehensive, and accessible lectures.

Good review of science.
Revisado: 01-09-19
Everything discussed is relevant to today. However, these lectures were developed before the millennium. That fact means that the great discoveries of the last twenty years are missing. Far more research has been done on the climate , genetics, and artificial intelligence. Professor Hazen today, I imagine, would lecture differently on these subjects.

Historia
Geology is often thought of as simply the study of rocks. In reality, geology is the study of our planet on all scales, from microscopic to planet-wide, and ranging in time from almost instantaneous events, like earthquakes, to the glacially slow motion of the tectonic plates. Everything we know about our world from a geologic perspective is based on information locked into the rock record and the job of a geologist is to tease out that story through a wide variety of observations. This insightful course explores a range of topics that help to tell the story of Earth and to explain the discipline of Geology and the role of the geologist.

Great except for one piece of false information
Revisado: 07-17-18
Pole reversal was well known through geologic studies done before 1920's. The timing was being developed by 1920. The only computers then were women who did mathematical calculations for lazy men. It was one of the lines of evidence for plate tectonics in the 1960's. Please don't rewrite history.

Historia
In this rich, irreverent, and compelling history, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Steven Weinberg takes us across centuries, from ancient Miletus to medieval Baghdad and Oxford, from Plato's Academy and the Museum of Alexandria to the cathedral school of Chartres and the Royal Society of London. He shows that the scientists of ancient and medieval times not only did not understand what we understand about the world--they did not understand what there is to understand or how to understand it.

Great mind's interpretation.
Revisado: 12-24-17
Dr. Weinberg's historical perspective is similar to one I found in Will Durant's "History of Civilization". The added perspective of a dedicated scientific mind is what sets this book apart from a simple historical review. With these personal interpretations this book becomes a primary source for research into the ideas of a Nobel Prize Laureate.

Historia
In the scorching summer of 1878, with the Gilded Age in its infancy, three tenacious and brilliant scientists raced to Wyoming and Colorado to observe a rare total solar eclipse. One sought to discover a new planet. Another - an adventuresome female astronomer - fought to prove that science was not anathema to femininity. And a young megalomaniacal inventor, with the tabloid press fast on his heels, sought to test his scientific bona fides and light the world through his revelations.

Nature, Scientific Discovery, Equality, & Eclipse
Revisado: 07-08-17
This a good primer for what to expect out of the 2017 eclipse and the one coming in the 2020's. It is a wonderful historical narrative about the slow development of scientific theories. Especially how the only scientific facts are those that tell us what Nature isn't. In some small part this book gives an insight into how scientific progress comes after a society is able to fund it when its economy has developed excess capital much like that needed for the arts. There is also some exposition on the negative effects of competition and ego in science. It also reminds us of the slow recognition of woman's place in science and society.
